The Metro-North Walk Bridge in Norwalk
is Working...
For Now

The Metro-North Walk Bridge in Norwalk can now open and close automatically without the aid of dozens of workers to operate it, as design work continues on its replacement.

The 118-year-old rotating Walk Bridge carries four tracks over the Norwalk River and opens and closes for marine traffic. It malfunctioned twice last year, stranding hundreds of Metro-North riders along the New Haven Line and causing delays and headaches.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said that the state would replace the bridge with a new structure, and last year secured the $465 million necessary to complete the project.

In a press conference Tuesday, Connecticut Transportation Commissioner James Redeker announced that the bridge can now open and close on its own.    For More, click... HERE

The Mayflower II Restoration

Last fall the Mayflower II was hauled out at Mystic Seaport for exploratory surveys to determine future restoration plans. The goal is to have her completely restored by 2020, the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims' arrival in New England.

The 58 year-old square-rigged vessel has undergone an enormous battery of activity, including a comprehensive out-of-the-water survey. The survey additionally required that over 130 tons of iron and stone ballast be removed for the first time since her construction.  Over the winter, a number of repairs were made to the ship's hull, including the replacement of planks, frames and much re caulking of the seams both below the waterline and up on deck.

She is expected to launch the first week of May and return to Plymouth MA after her hull swells.
