Spring Boating
The Water is still Dangerously Cold
A byproduct of this year's late Spring is colder than usual water.
Let's review the basics of cold water boating: - As a rule of thumb, It's about 10 degrees colder on the water than on land. Wear layers of clothing with a wind breaking shell on top and bring along hats and gloves.
- Make a float plan so someone will
know you are going out... and call to tell them that you returned safely.
- Check the weather. Use the links included on the Norwalk Cove home page to see the current weather in Norwalk from the weather station atop the Cove Administration building and the links for current radar.
- Wear a life jacket. Even if you don't in the Summer.
- Bring a VHF radio and cell phone. There are far fewer boats out there to rescue you than during the season.

Soundkeepers Clean Boaters Guide
Toxic chemicals are used in all aspects of boating activities. We all use them (often without realizing it) with products like chlorine bleach, ammonia, cleaning solvents, metal-based bottom paints, and polishes. The use of toxic chemicals is often more habit than necessity. The good news is that safe, effective substitutes and alternative cleaning methods do exist.
How do toxic chemicals get into Long Island Sound?
- Stormwater runoff from pesticide and fertlizer applications, car engine fluids, earth-moving activities, and any other material dumped on land or water
- Industrial pipes
- Sewage pipes
- Maintenance activities in marinas and on boats
Soundkeeper has prepared a great guide that suggests alternate eco-friendly cleaners and marine products. As an alternative to harsh chemicals, look for environmentally friendly products to use this season.
See the Guide on the SOUNDKEEPER Site..... HERE
