The Maritime Aquarium's New Catamaran has Arrived in Norwalk
The new 63 foot aluminum catamaran is revolutionary in design as the only research vessel in the world with hybrid-electric propulsion. She'll run virtually silent on electric power for her 2½ hour "study cruises" on Long Island Sound.
The cat, christened "Spirit of the Sound" last Friday, is replacing the 34 year old, diesel powered "Oceana", a familiar sight in Norwalk ha rbor. The new cat can carry 60 passengers in a boat / classroom environment versus the 29 passengers carried by Oceana. Seal Spotting Cruises are scheduled to begin in December.
The boat was designed by Incat Crowther of Australia, and built in Mamaroneck, NY, by the Robert E. Derecktor Inc. shipyard. Her hybrid-electric propulsion system was made by BAE Systems Inc., Corvus Energy and Northern Lights Hybrid Marine. Major contributors include: the Per and Astrid Heidenreich Family Foundation, George & Carol Bauer of Wilton, and The TK Foundation. For more, click HERE

Cove Happenings
The Gun Boat 60 "Fault Tolerant" was hauled this week for maintenance before heading to Annapolis to appear at the boat show. (Your chance to see this stunning beauty close up)
With her all carbon and epoxy construction, she measures in at 60 ft X 21 ft and weighs only 42,900 lbs fully loaded. Capable of 300+ mile days, her awesome speed belies the sophisticated beauty of her interior.
Norwalk Cove is one of a handful of yards on the East coast capable of hauling vessels of this size with the mast up.

Ship 6 Celebration Continues !
Congrats to Ship 6 on their 3rd place finish in the Stamford Yacht Club's Vineyard Race held over labor day weekend. The teenage boys and girls sailed the middle length Seaflower Reef course (143 nautical miles) aboard Celebration II, and did it in 27 hours! Along the way they saw 2 shooting stars, a low flying sea plane, a beautiful sunset and sunrise, as well as lots of phosphorous glowing in their wake during the night. And of course they did lots of navigation throughout the adventure. For more information about the year-round Ship 6 program go to www.norwalkship6.org
