Bermuda Race Update

The start is tomorrow, June 20'th, with 165 boats entered in the 49'th sprint to Bermuda.

The starting line will be off Castle Hill, in the mouth of Narragansett Bay.

Organized by the Cruising Club of America and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, the 635-mile Newport Bermuda Race is sailed almost entirely out of sight of land and across the Gulf Stream.

Explains race chairman Fred Deichmann, "We evaluate the crew and inspect the boat because, as the Notice of Race states, "The Newport Bermuda Race is not a race for novices.""

The 4'th of July is only TWO weeks away - Have you made your plans?

Are you planning to stay local? Heading out to watch the fireworks or staying at the dock?  Planning a mini-cruise? Now is the time to make sure your plans and the boat are shipshape.

Check your running lights and make sure there are batteries in the flashlights. Are your flares current? Remember it's illegal to run with docking lights, spotlights or fishing lights on constantly. Plan for a designated captain who will run the boat while the crew indulges a wee bit. The Police & Coast Guard are performing random safety checks.  Remember you'll be coming back in on a falling tide!

Rex Note:  On July 3rd, for the Norwalk Fireworks, the Rex rack service hours will be extended to accommodate returning boats.

Rex & Cove Note:   Please tell the Dockmaster anytime you will be away for the night. The best way to insure your slip will be empty upon your return is to send us your float plan that includes your return date. That way, if you need to return early, we will be sure your slip is empty - given a few hours notice.  Thanks.

The Summer Solstice is June 21'st at 6:51 AM

The Summer Solstice - The longest day of the year, arrives Saturday at exactly 6:51 am EDT. At that time the Northern Hemisphere of the Earth will reach it's point of greatest inclination to the Sun.    SuperMoon

Thought to be the time "when the forces of nature are at their most powerful, and the boundaries between the physical and spiritual worlds are thinnest."

There will be full moons this season on: July 12'th, August 10'th and September 9'th

The "WALK" Train Bridge OPENED!

Last Saturday morning a flotilla of boats that had been "trapped" up the Norwalk River escaped!

With an army of almost 50 engineers, mechanics, electricians and laborers, the bridge (which was scheduled to open at 9:00 am), opened at 10:00 am for 30 minutes to allow the small armada passage.

The bridge will not likely open for the next three weeks as engineers and consultants troubleshoot the immediate mechanical problems. Discussions regarding a replacement bridge (and funding) have begun in Hartford and Washington.

Three Major Responsibilities of Every Boater

  1. Practice good seamanship.
It is the responsibility of every boat or PWC operator to take all necessary action to avoid a collision, taking into account the weather, vessel traffic, and limits of other vessels. Such action should be taken in ample time to avoid a collision and at a safe distance from other vessels. Be responsible for the safety of your crew and vessel.
  2. Keep a proper lookout.
Failing to keep a sharp lookout is the most common cause of collisions. Every operator must keep a proper lookout, using both sight and hearing, at all times. Watch and listen for other vessels, radio communications, navigational hazards, and others involved in water activities.
  3. Maintain a safe speed.
Safe speed is the speed that ensures you will have ample time to avoid a collision and can stop within an appropriate distance. Safe speed will vary depending on conditions such as wind, water conditions, navigational hazards, visibility, surrounding vessel traffic density, and the maneuverability of your boat or PWC. Always reduce speed and navigate with extreme caution at night and when visibility is restricted.

From a review:  " Jam bands and seafarers make for unlikely bedfellows at this proudly hippie retreat, which faithfully features freewheeling folk/blues ensembles. It has also recently folded in a strong culture of boating enthusiasts, who take pride in arriving by sea to the coastal grounds..."
