US Coast Guard Navigation Center Web Site
A Wealth of Information
This is the CG website for the Notice to Mariners, GPS advisories & status, Almanacs, Nav Rules, AIS and more.
The weekly Notice to Mariners includes Nav hazards, Missing buoys, Light Lists (missing, extinguished, moved, repaired), Chart Corrections and proposed changes.
It also includes Bridge Repairs and info (interestingly, there are no notifications regarding Norwalk's WALK RR bridge - which is still closed to marine traffic*) also including Marine events (races, fireworks, swim events) and info on Hydrographic Survey sites and ongoing operations.
Find it HERE*Note: The WALK RR bridge is scheduled to be opened on Saturday morning at 9:00 am according to Coast Guard sources, however the Metro-North dispatch center is still saying it's closed to marine traffic until further notice. Any boats that have been trapped up the river should call the Metro-North dispatch center at 212-340-2050 daily for updates.

Radio Watchkeeping
The boating regulations say:
In general, any vessel equipped with a VHF marine radiotelephone (whether voluntarily or required to) must maintain a watch on channel 16 (156.800 MHz) whenever the radiotelephone is not being used to communicate. Source: FCC 47 CFR §§ 80.148, 80.310, NTIA Manual 8.2.29.6.c(2)(e), ITU RR 31.17, 33.18, AP13 §25.2
Turn on your radio to Ch 16 & adjust the volume. Turn the squelch down until it "hisses" then back up a bit...it's now tuned. Remember push to talk - release to listen!

Night Time Boating - Go Slow and Lookout!
Boating at night brings a wonderful sense of quiet freedom, but slowing down and keeping a sharp lookout is needed. It's easy to rely on instruments and speed along following your outbound GPS path. But there are dangers lurking under the water and out ahead.
A local boater was coming home at night encountered a floating tree stump or log, holing his boat at the waterline. When the water reached his shoes, he beached the boat to prevent sinking and managed to get it onto it's trailer.
Keep a careful watch for floating debris, especially after a storm or extra high tide. Also watch out for boats ahead. All they display is a white sternlight, which is easily masked by lights from the shoreline.
