It's not a chartplotter. It's not a guidebook. It's a new type of app. It assists you with repetitive tasks and uses the community of boaters to make your cruising experiences better and safer.  The ActiveCaptain Companion uses the ActiveCaptain data and your eBoatCards relationships to provide a marine cruising guide and social navigation system (without an internet connection). It is available for Windows, Macintosh, Android, and iOS. And it's free!
The Companion displays a map background using streetmap data. With a GPS active, the "Up Ahead" section shows what's coming next. As you move along the water, you'll be warned and the lists will automatically update.
The Companion keeps the entire database of ActiveCaptain markers downloaded for offline access. No internet connection is needed to display marker details and reviews. When you have a network connection, you can update the offline database from the ActiveCaptain server to guarantee that you have the very latest updates and reviews. Mystic Seaport's hosts it's 35th annual Sea Music Festival, one of the world's premier sea music events. Fans of traditional sea music gather each year to hear international performers and the Museum's chantey staff perform music from the golden Age of Sail through the best of contemporary compositions.

The 2014 Clearwater Festival will take place on Sat and Sun, June 21st and 22nd at Croton Point Park in Croton-on-Hudson, Westchester County, NY. Festival gates open to attendees at 9AM.
Clearwater's Great Hudson River Revival (aka "the Clearwater Festival" or "Revival") features seven sustainably powered stages with diverse music, dance, storytelling and family-oriented programming as well as a juried Handcrafters' Village, the Green Living Expo, the Working Waterfront with small boat exhibits and rides, the Artisanal Food & Farm Market, environmental education displays and exhibits, and the Circle of Song where audience participation is the focus.

2014 SWIM Marathon is still looking for Boat Captains
St. Vincent's SWIM Across the Sound Marathon is the annual season-ending and marquee event of fundraising for the SWIM's cancer prevention, education and assistance programs. It will be held Saturday, August 2, 2014 beginning at Port Jefferson, New York and ending at Captain's Cove, Bridgeport.

The Bridge is Stuck
Last Thursday morning & again on Friday, the 114 year old Metro-North RR bridge over the Norwalk river (the "WALK" bridge) got stuck in the open position, stopping all RR traffic during rush hours. RR engineers finally got it closed, and it stayed closed for five days as they rushed to repair the century old parts.
During the malfunction, hundreds  of train passengers were taken by bus between South Norwalk and East Norwalk to transfer to trains - and all marine traffic that required the 562 foot bridge to open was stopped, stranding dozens of boaters literally "up the river."
CT has applied for $349 million in federal funding to replace the bridge. That would lead to some interesting logistics, since the bridge and tracks bisect the maritime aquarium. Imagine two years of no RR connection over the bridge, with passengers forced to use bus shuttles between the South and East Norwalk stations... YIKES. And the Greenwich, Westport and Milford bridges are all of the same vintage, suffering additional problems during extreme heat or cold spells.
