Rescue at Sea With a Small Child -
The Real Story
From Latitude 38 - California
In an era when sound-bite journalism and short attention spans are the norm, it was no surprise that the dramatic South Pacific rescue of the "Rebel Heart " crew - two young parents and their 3- and 1-year-old daughters - quickly faded from the media spotlight shortly after the family returned safely to San Diego on April 11 aboard the USS Vandegrift.
That's exactly what parents Eric and Charlotte Kaufman hoped would happen. But they promised to share all the details, and correct widespread media reporting errors on their ordeal, once their story had become yesterday's news. Last Sunday, a full month after returning home, they finally broke their silence in an NPR segment called This American Life.

The Niņa and Pinta are coming to Captain's Cove this Weekend.
Replicas of two of Christopher Columbus' ships, the Niņa and Pinta, are set to dock at the Captain's Cove in Bridgeport from May 23 through 26, with boarding opportunities available to the public. The ships are operated by the Columbus Foundation out of the British Virgin Islands.
The Niņa is an exact replica and was built completely by hand and without the use of power tools before her 1991 launch.
The Pinta, an authentic reproduction of Christopher Columbus' ship, was launched in 2005 in Valenca, Brazil. She is a larger version of the archetypal caravel and offers larger deck space for walk-aboard tours, private parties, and charters.
Both ships tour together as a sailing museum dedicated to educating the public and school children. Onboard exhibits highlight the history of the Age of Discovery, navigation of the era, how the ships were built, and a taste of what life was like more than 500 years ago.
