Memorial Day is less than TWO Weeks Away
With the late Spring and crazy rush to get in the water, it seems the major things get checked off the never ending "to do" list, but equally important minor things get left behind. With the holiday weekend coming up soon, and that first cruise planned, it's time to ask: Have you reviewed your safety gear? Are flares up to date (check the expiration date - 42 months after manufacture)? Is your other equipment clean, ready and accessible: life jackets, fire extinguishers, inflatable vests, foul weather gear, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen. Do you have extra drinking water on board? A first aid kit? Seasick tablets and other medicine? Warm throw blankets and pillows?
Snacks, kids toys, electronics and libations? Some good DVD's? Radio check?
Remember that keeping the crew happy is really #1 on every list!

If you are Planning a Cruise, Remember the
Long Island Loop Cruising Club
Rex and Cove, together with other independent marinas on the Long Island Sound, offer each others customers discounted rates on overnight dockage. This gives our customers the opportunity to visit places up and down the Sound in short hops. It's an economical and easy to visit close destinations which may not have been on your radar.
Each member of the Long Island Loop Cruising Club offers something a little different. Boaters can book online or by phone and must mention that they are Dock or Rack Customers (Members) of either Cove or Rex and part of the Long Island Loop Cruising Club to receive discounts. Slips are based on availability, and you must show your membership card.

Marine Safety Tip: Sending a VHF Distress Call
You may only have a very short time to send a distress call on the VHF radio. Here is the step by step procedure:
- Turn on and set your VHF radio channel onto 16.
- Say "MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY"
- "This is (name of boat )" Repeat boat name three times.
- Describe your boat, such as, size, rig type, color and tell the number of persons aboard.
- Indicate the nature of distress (sinking, fire, etc.)
- Give position by latitude and longitude or by bearing and distance to a well-known landmark or navigational aid, or in any terms that will assist a responding station in locating the vessel in distress. Include any information, such as, vessel course, speed, and destination.
- Indicate the kind of assistance desired.
- End with "over."
If you do not receive any answer, repeat your call every 2 minutes.
Note: If you are NOT in a life-threatening situation, but still are in real need of assistance, use the same procedure as above, EXCEPT that in step 2, you replace the word MAYDAY by the the words "Pan Pan" (pronounce PAHNN PAHNN).A Tip: Push the button on the microphone to talk, release to listen!
