Safety at Sea Seminar Update # 2
MOB (Man Overboard) - or politically correct POB (Person Overboard) pickup Have you considered how you would go back, find and get someone out of the water if they fell overboard ? After practicing on a 44 foot sloop in 25 knot gusts, I can tell you, It's not easy !
Whether you sail or power, the principles are the same:
Step 1: Yell "MAN OVERBOARD" so the entire crew knows. Step 2: One person becomes the "pointer" and never takes their eyes off the victim Step 3: Push the MOB button on your GPS or Plotter. Step 4: Throw a flotation device to the person and deploy a lifesling or other pickup tool with a floating retrieval line Step 5: Slow / stop the boat and make a circle to come back around to the person in the water (as if you were picking up a mooring) Step 6: Stop the boat - keep the prop clear. Sailboats may drop sails to stop the boat. Step 7: Retrieve the MOB using a hoist, block and tackle, halyard or many hands at the rail (it's harder than it looks) Step 8: Begin treatment for hypothermia Don't put anyone else in the water unless it is ABSOLUTELY necessary (and you can get them both back out) Click on the links below for good videos and articles:
