The Aquarium Catamaran has a Name !

The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk's new hybrid-powered research vessel will be named  "Spirit of the Sound".

The Spirit of the Sound name was chosen out of 315 names suggested by Norwalk school students in a recent contest. Kiara Velazquez, a sophomore at Brien McMahon High School, wins the contest's grand prize for submitting the winning name.

Safety at Sea Seminar Update # 1

After spending last Saturday at the VERY serious Safety at Sea training at the SUNY Merchant Marine Academy, I came home home with one ingrained thought....

DON'T  END UP IN THE WATER  !!!

It is amazing how well an inflatable life vest (PFD) will float you with full foul weather gear and boots on.  But it was very sobering to realize how immobilized you were in the water with it all inflated and how your body heat dissipated, even when in a close huddle with others in the warm pool water.

Climbing into the various inflated liferafts was a exhausting chore. Finally, once aboard a loaded six man liferaft with five inches of water splashing about, stuffy claustrophobia sets in.  It's hard to imagine the same conditions in rough seas, high winds and cold water.

Lesson # 2:   You REALLY don't want to end up in a liferaft until you actually have to.  Your boat had better be sinking!
Ten common fishing terms explained......

Catch and Release - A conservation motion that happens most often right before the local Fish and Game officer pulls over a boat that has caught over it's limit.

Hook - (1) A curved piece of metal used to catch fish. (2) A clever advertisement to entice a fisherman to spend his live savings on a new rod and reel. (3) The punch administered by said fisherman's wife after he spends their life savings (see also, Right Hook, Left Hook).

Line - Something you give your co-workers when they ask on Monday how your fishing went the past weekend.
