An Incredible Feat of Marine Engineering !
The MS Costa Concordia was a 952 foot cruise ship built in 2004 by the Fincantieri's Sestri Ponente yard in Italy and operated from 2005 until January 13, 2012 (by a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation) when she wrecked off the coast of Isola del Giglio in Italy.
With a 116 ft. beam and weighing in at 114,137 GT, she was 70 feet longer and 67,809 GT LARGER than the Titanic !
The salvage plan which was to cost more than $300 million and projected to be the most expensive salvage ever, including:
- Secure the hull to the land using steel cables, to stop her falling deeper.
- Build horizontal underwater platforms below the ship.
- Bring the hull to vertical, by winching (or parbuckling) the hull onto the platform.
- Attach airtight tanks, called sponsons, to either side of the hull.
- Refloat the hull and tanks..
- Tow to an Italian port for disassembly and scrapping.
