Long Island Sound Seafloor Study Underway
Kicking off a multiyear project to survey the sea floor of LIS and map bottom habitats, marine life communities and other conditions, the
Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), along with UCONN and other institutions, is now scanning the floor of the Sound.
The scientists will map the seafloor topography, sediment types such as mud, sand, gravel, and rocks, and the animals associated with these areas. They'll also measure the water's currents, temperature, salinity, and oxygen levels. They'll also be be able to update charts with the best data ever recorded for the area.

Marine Safety Tip:
The major cause of boating fatalities is drowning, and a huge majority of those who drown are not wearing life jackets or Personal Flotation Devices. Be aware that most boating accidents happen on clear days with no wind and warm temperatures and that the accident count peaks in July.
Also remember, it is illegal to allow anyone to sit on the bow dangling their feet over the side while underway ! |
