Spring Boat Chores
As the season gets off to a start (if the weather would cooperate !) it's time to spruce up your boat with a good spring cleaning. Don't forget cleaning the isinglass, replacing the 'damp rid' to get rid of odors built up over the winter, wiping down headliners and bunks.... Have you cleaned the fridge, flushed the water tanks? Chemicals in the holding tank ? Inspected the inflatable and had the outboard tuned up? Check our stores to find the supplies you need, at competitive prices.
While you are cleaning, it's important that you inspect your boat in the same manner a pilot would inspect his plane before take off. Double check hose clamps, through hulls and seacocks, wiring connections and running lights. Pump all the antifreeze out of your tanks before filling. Check battery levels, along with oil and coolant levels. Replace smoke alarm and CO2 detector batteries. Shake up your dry chemical fire extinguishers to make sure the powder isn't caked in the bottom. Are your dock lines, running and standing rigging OK ? Remember that all of Long Island Sound is now a No Discharge zone... plan on visiting the Cove pump out station or call the pump out boat to get on the weekly list. |
The Green Marina Initiative
There are many "green" cleaning products being introduced to the marine industry. Before we can recommend them, we have to test them in the real marine environment. As part of the Green Marina initiative, Rex has been conducting tests of some of these new cleaners and will present a study shortly. Meanwhile please see the list of biodegradable cleaners compiled by Michael Garvey at Rex which is posted in each store. |
Member Cards
Cove and Rex member cards from 2011 will be honored through 2012 at the
fuel dock. PLEASE tell the fuel dock staff PRIOR to fueling up that you have a card. New members will be receiving cards and info packets at our June 2nd "Welcome Back" party celebrating the grand opening of the new coffee shop. (Did you submit your ideas for a Coffee Shop name? The contest ends Friday afternoon 5/4/12) |
Safe Navigation
Last Fall's hurricane and Winter storms may have changed the location and depths of popular shallow water "short cuts", sand bars and anchorages. Please proceed carefully as you re-acquaint yourself with occasionally visited locations. Please also remember that larger vessels in the channel and at the fuel dock may be constrained by draft and you need to give them room to maneuver safely. Darting around them to get in or out of the marina is illegal !
