Impact on Weight and Physical Function of Intensive Medical Weight Loss in Older Adults with Stage II and III Obesity
Ard, J. D., et al. Obesity, 2016
A six-month study was conducted to compare weight loss following either a balanced deficit diet (BDD, 500 kcal/day below energy needs) or a low-calorie, meal replacement diet (LCD, 960 kcal/day). Recommendations for behavior change and physical activity were similar for both groups. Results showed that the LCD average weight change was -19.1 kg or 15.9% of initial body weight compared with -9.1 + 2.7 kg or 7.2 + 1.9% for BDD. LCD lost more fat mass (-7.7 kg) but had similar loss of lean mass (-1.7 kg) compared with BDD. These results suggest that low-calorie meal replacement diets may be superior to the more traditional balanced deficit diets in terms of weight loss and decreases in fat mass, at least in the short term. Examining Binge-eating Disorder and Food Addiction in Adults with Overweight and Obesity
Ivezaj, V., et al. Obesity, 2016
Individuals with overweight and obesity (n=502) were examined for binge-eating disorder (BED) and food addiction (FA) via a web-based survey with established measures of eating and health-related behaviors. The survey found that 8.5% of respondents met BED criteria, 16.6% met FA criteria, 10.1% met both BED and FA criteria, and 64.8% met neither BED nor FA criteria and were considered the control group. The three groups with eating issues (BED, FA, and BED+FA) had greater problems with eating disorder psychopathology, impulsivity, and self-control than the control group, while the FA and BED+FA groups had higher depression scores relative to the control group. The three eating groups did not differ significantly from each other. Overall, the results from this study suggest that nearly one-third of individuals with overweight and obesity may have BED, FA, or both. The presence of BED, FA, or co-occurring BED and FA may require specific interventions to combat obesity in these individuals.  View article
Naltrexone/Bupropion Extended Release-induced Weight Loss Is Independent of Nausea in Subjects without Diabetes
Hong, K., et al. Clinical Obesity, 2016.
In phase-3 clinical studies of naltrexone/bupropion extended release (NB), nausea occurred in significantly higher proportions of subjects randomized to NB versus placebo (PBO). Therefore, a pooled analysis of three phase-3, 56-week, PBO-controlled studies was conducted to determine the effect of nausea on weight loss in NB- and PBO-treated subjects without diabetes. The analysis found that subjects receiving NB (n=1,778) lost more weight than those receiving PBO (n=1,160), and weight loss was not different between subjects reporting and not reporting nausea in either treatment arm. Severity of nausea was mild to moderate in more than 95% of all cases. In the NB arm, week one of treatment had the highest incidence of nausea onset (9%). These results show that nausea associated with taking NB is unlikely to be severe, mostly occurs early in treatment, and is not a contributor to weight loss. View article
