Relationships between Time Use and Obesity in a Representative Sample of Americans
Patel, V. C., et al. Obesity, 2016
A study of more than 28,000 individuals ages 22-70 was conducted to assess behaviors associated with obesity. The study found that short and long sleep and work were associated with higher BMI. During the work week, people with obesity were more likely to work between 3:30 AM and 7:00 AM and sleep during the day, and they were less likely to participate in sports, exercise, or recreation. Those who did participate in sports, exercise, or recreation did so for amounts of time similar to individuals with normal BMI. Individuals with obesity were more likely to watch television almost all hours of the day and were less likely to participate in food and drink preparation and housework on weekdays than individuals with normal weight. The authors concluded that both short and long sleep, and the time of day that sleep and work occur, are associated with obesity. Television is the main sedentary activity that is associated with obesity. View article
Endobarrier® in Grade I Obese Patients with Long-Standing Type 2 Diabetes: Role of Gastrointestinal Hormones in Glucose Metabolism
Vilarrasa, N., et al. Obesity Surgery, 2016
A study was done to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Endobarrier®, a duodenal-jejunal bypass liner that physically mimics the intestinal bypass component of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and duodenal-jejunal exclusion surgery. Twenty-one patients with diabetes and obesity were implanted with Endobarrier®. After 12 months, patients lost an average of 14.9% of their total body weight. HbA1c decreased 0.6% at 12 months. GLP-1 values were not different before and after the implant. Fasting plasma ghrelin and PYY concentrations increased by month 12. Minor adverse events occurred in 14% of patients and major events occurred in 9.5% of patients. These findings suggest that patients with diabetes and obesity who get the Endobarrier® may expect significant weight loss after one year and improvement in glucose control. View article
The Influence of School Nutrition Programs on the Weight of Low-income Children: A Treatment Effect Analysis
Capogrossi, K., and You, W. Health Economics, 2016.
The School Breakfast Program (SBP) and National School Lunch Program (NSLP) were created to improve children's health outcomes. A study was conducted to evaluate how school meal programs affect child BMI from first through eighth grade. Results showed that short-term participation in only the NSLP increased the chances that children will be overweight, particularly in the South, Northeast, and rural areas. Participation in both programs from first through eighth grade increased the likelihood that these students will be overweight. The authors suggest that these programs should continue to be evaluated, given the association with childhood obesity. View article
