Recommendations for the Presurgical Psychosocial Evaluation of Bariatric Surgery Patients
Sogg, S., et al. Surg Obes Relat Dis, 2016
There are several approaches to evaluate psychosocial factors prior to bariatric surgery, which may have a significant effect on long-term outcomes. This article reviews the recommendations for the psychosocial evaluation of bariatric surgery patients. A clinical interview is widely regarded as an essential component of the pre-surgical psychosocial evaluation, and this interview differs from a routine general mental health intake interview. It includes domains related to weight history, eating disorders, psychosocial history, current stressors, social support, quality of life, health-related behaviors, motivation, knowledge, and more. This evaluation is essential, as it will help to identify factors that may pose challenges to achieving optimal surgical outcomes. View article
Structured Exercise in Obese Diabetic Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Leehey, D. J., et al. Am J Nephrol, 2016
A study was conducted to determine the effects of structured exercise on physical fitness, kidney function, endothelial function, inflammation, and body composition in patients with diabetes, obesity, and chronic kidney disease (CKD). The subjects either dieted or dieted and completed aerobic and resistance training three days per week for 12 weeks, followed by 40 weeks of home exercise. Results showed that there were no significant differences in urine albumin to creatinine ratio, estimated glomerular filtration rate, endothelial function, inflammation, or body composition between the groups. There was an improvement in cardiovascular fitness in the exercise group. This study suggested that in subjects with obesity, diabetes, and CKD, structured exercise did not improve body composition or renal function. View article
The Effects of Resveratrol Supplementation in Overweight and Obese Humans: A Systematic Review of Randomized Trials
