Obesity Organizations Respond to New FDA Nutrition Facts Label
Members of the Obesity Care Continuum -- including OMA, The Obesity Society, the Obesity Action Coalition, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics -- wrote a letter to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commending the changes to the nutrition facts label. The letter states that "the label changes for serving size, servings per container, calorie count, and added sugar will benefit consumers seeking accurate information." Following these changes to the nutrition facts label, Obesity Care Continuum groups hope to influence how statements appear to consumers on the front of food packages.

Is Butter Back? A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Butter Consumption and Risk of Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes, and Total Mortality
Pimpin, L., et al. PLoS One, 2016
Until recently, fat was arguably the most vilified nutrient in the American diet, but its negative effects on health have come into question. A systematic review was conducted to examine the association of butter consumption with all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Results showed that butter consumption was weakly associated with all-cause mortality, was not significantly associated with coronary heart disease or stroke, and was inversely associated with incidence of diabetes. These results indicate that there is only a small or neutral association between butter intake and mortality, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. The authors suggest that focusing on butter consumption in dietary guidelines is not warranted. View article

Binge-eating Disorder in Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Brownley, K. A., et al. Annals of Internal Medicine, 2016
Binge-eating disorder affects about 3.5 percent of women and 2 percent of men in the United States. A study was conducted to evaluate the evidence of the benefits and risks of psychological and pharmacologic therapies for adults with binge-eating disorder. The study found that people struggling with binge-eating disorder may have promising treatment options to help them curtail their eating. Cognitive behavioral therapy; Vyvanse (Lisdexamfetamine); second-generation antidepressants such as Prozac, Zoloft and Wellbutrin; and topiramate all reduced binge eating. Lisdexamfetamine and topiramate reduced weight in adults with binge-eating disorder. Given the high level of association among binge-eating disorder, obesity, and depression, the authors suggest that future studies should determine whether certain treatments are better suited for particular types of patients. Pediatric Obesity Pharmacotherapy: Current State of the Field, Review of the Literature and Clinical Trial Considerations
Kelly, A. S., et al. Int J Obesity, 2016
Few medications are available for the treatment of obesity in children, despite the increasing prevalence of childhood obesity and the increasing number of medications approved to treat obesity in adults. This review article provides a background on the current state of pediatric obesity medication, summarizes pediatric obesity pharmacotherapy clinical trials, and discusses study design issues to consider when clinical trials are conducted in children and adolescents. The authors recommend that there be a consensus among regulatory agencies, such as the FDA and EMA, to provide guidelines for the design of pediatric obesity pharmacotherapy clinical trials to stimulate higher-quality research. The authors suggest that clinical trials should be designed and conducted appropriately to ensure they generate high-quality evidence for the safety and efficacy of various medications used to treat pediatric obesity.
