Attend YWM2015 with your patients

The Obesity Action Coalition's (OAC) 4th Annual Your Weight Matters National Convention (YWM2015) is quickly approaching, and it's an event that you won't want to miss. Not only will you and your staff be able to attend the same sessions and hear from the same health experts as your patients, but some health care providers may be able to receive up to 16.5 continuing education (CE) credits for attending -- the largest amount of credits the OAC has been able to offer at the Convention to date. YWM2015 will take place August 13-16 at the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter. The early-bird deadline is June 5, and by registering early, you can receive access to the convention for as low as $30 per day. We encourage you to share this great event with your patients, who can benefit from learning all the latest evidence-based strategies for weight management. Learn more about the CE credits offered at YWM2015. To learn more about YWM2015 and register to attend, please visit www.YWMConvention.com

researcher_science_tube.jpg Research Basics Workshop to be offered at Overcoming Obesity 2015
For the first time ever, the Obesity Treatment Foundation (OTF) is holding a Research Basics Workshop at Overcoming Obesity 2015. This interactive, half-day workshop is designed to help clinicians learn the basics of conducting practice-based research and publishing the results. Throughout the afternoon, there will be opportunities to interact with presenters and ask questions about your own research. The Research Basics Workshop takes place Oct. 1, just prior to the Fall Obesity Summit, and is worth up to 4.25 hours of CME. Online registration is now available.
Resources
The Obesity Treatment Foundation (OTF) helps keep you up to date on current obesity research! Each week, OTF publishes a brief overview of three recent studies so you can be in the know, even during your busiest days. Click the titles below to view the full articles, and please consider supporting OTF so we can continue to provide you with updates on the latest research.
Jones, B. J., and Bloom, S. R. Drugs, 2015.
This review article explores the history of anti-obesity pharmacotherapy, the current available medications, and what is on the horizon. The authors suggest that understanding the pathways that regulate energy balance will result in practitioners having more confidence that recently approved agents will be safe and effective for their patients. They also suggest that combination therapy may be a viable treatment strategy to safely maximize weight loss, given the multiplicity of pathways regulating food intake and energy expenditure.

Gammone, M. A., and D'Orazio, N. Mar Drugs, 2015.
Fucoxanthin is a promising nutritional ingredient, a marine carotenoid, which can be found in macro-algae. It has been shown to have anti-obesity, anti-diabetes, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer activities. Fucoxanthin induces uncoupling protein -1 (UCP1) in abdominal white adipose tissue (WAT) mitochondria, increasing fat oxidation and heat production in WAT. Fucoxanthin also improves insulin resistance and decreases blood glucose levels through the regulation of cytokine secretions from WAT. This article reviews the background of fucoxanthin, which suggests that it is a promising potential anti-obesity agent.

Paleolithic nutrition improves plasma lipid concentrations of hypercholesterolemic adults to a greater extent than traditional heart-healthy dietary recommendations
Pastore, R. L., et al. Nutrition Research, 2015.

The Paleo Diet is a very popular dietary pattern; however, as with most diets, it is controversial. This study compared the Paleo Diet to a traditional "heart-healthy" diet that is grain-based and replaces saturated fat with carbohydrates and reduces total fat intake. Both the grain-free Paleo diet and the traditional heart-healthy diet were followed for four months. Results showed that compared to baseline and the traditional diet, the Paleo diet significantly lowered total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, independent of any changes to body weight. The Paleo Diet may be considered for nutritional management of hyperlipidemic individuals, as it may to be more effective than traditional heart-healthy diets at lowering cardiovascular risk.
