Obesity Algorithm® new look revealed
During the opening keynote lecture of the Spring Obesity Summit at Obesity Medicine 2015, Dr. Harold Bays revealed the 2015 updates and new look of the Obesity Algorithm, presented by ASBP. We redesigned the algorithm to make it easier to learn and present the material, but the content remains the same! Want a printed copy of the algorithm for your practice? Obesity Algorithm booklets are now available for sale in our online store. Featured member benefit: Online listing on www.FindObesityTreatment.org All physician, associate, doctorate, and international members receive an online practice listing at www.FindObesityTreatment.org, an online patient referral tool where individuals seeking medical treatment for obesity and associated conditions can find a provider in their area. Visit www.FindObesityTreatment.org to check your listing, and log in to your ASBP account to make any changes to your personal information. Questions? Email membership@asbp.org.
Complete your ABOM exam application If you are planning to sit for the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) certification exam in December 2015 and you took part in the recent Obesity Medicine 2015 conference or are planning to attend Overcoming Obesity 2015, now is the time to finish your ABOM exam application! The online exam application portal is open, and physician candidates who have completed their 60 CME credit requirement or are planning to fulfill the last remaining credits at Overcoming Obesity 2015 can complete the online application at this time. For doctors attending Overcoming Obesity 2015, submit your registration confirmation with your application, and ASBP will work with ABOM to verify your attendance and number of credits earned. Save yourself some time and finish your ABOM application now! March renewal drawing winner announced Congratulations to Mr. Roger Bickford from Sacramento, Calif., for winning ASBP's renewal reward drawing for March! If you renew your ASBP membership early (prior to your expiration date), you will be entered into a drawing to win a $50 Amazon gift card. Renewal notices are sent out four months in advance of your expiration date, and the sooner you renew, the more chances you will have to win. For example, if your membership expires in May, but you renew in March, you will receive three entries in the May drawing (one for March, one for April, and one for May). Questions? Email membership@asbp.org.

Balaban, S., et al. BioMed Research International, 2015.
There is growing acceptance for a link between obesity and cancer; however, the specific mechanisms that link the two diseases have not been fully elucidated. This review article covers the fundamental pathways of fatty-acid metabolism, including uptake, esterification, lipolysis, and mitochondrial oxidation. The authors explain how the mediators of these pathways are altered in cancer.
Lawson, E. L., et al. Obesity, 2015.
Jensterle, M., et al. Hormones, 2015.
The use of liraglutide, the long-acting glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist, in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has not yet been evaluated. A study was conducted in 32 women with obesity and PCOS to determine the effects on body weight when receiving either liraglutide 1.2 mg QD sc (n=17) or metformin 1000 mg BID po (n=15) for 12 weeks. The analysis showed that both metformin and liraglutide cause significant decreases in body mass index (BMI), body weight, waist circumference, and whole-body fat mass, with no significant differences between groups. However, in a subgroup of patients (n=9) with insulin resistance, severe obesity, and higher odds ratio for the metabolic syndrome (OR=3.9), patients taking liraglutide had a greater decrease in BMI than those taking metformin. These results suggest that liraglutide treatment may be beneficial for patients with obesity and PCOS, especially if they have a high metabolic risk profile.
