Obesity Algorithm® new look revealed
During the opening keynote lecture of the Spring Obesity Summit at Obesity Medicine 2015, Dr. Harold Bays revealed the 2015 updates and new look of the Obesity Algorithm, presented by ASBP. We redesigned the algorithm to make it easier to learn and present the material, but the content remains the same! Want a printed copy of the algorithm for your practice? Obesity Algorithm booklets are now available for sale in our online store.

Balaban, S., et al. BioMed Research International, 2015.
There is growing acceptance for a link between obesity and cancer; however, the specific mechanisms that link the two diseases have not been fully elucidated. This review article covers the fundamental pathways of fatty-acid metabolism, including uptake, esterification, lipolysis, and mitochondrial oxidation. The authors explain how the mediators of these pathways are altered in cancer.

Lawson, E. L., et al. Obesity, 2015.
Oxytocin, a peptide hormone primarily produced in the supraoptic and paraventricular hypothalamic nuclei, reduces caloric intake in animal models. Little is known about the role of oxytocin in human metabolism. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study was conducted to investigate oxytocin's effects on caloric intake in 25 healthy men. The study found that a single dose of intranasal oxytocin (24 IU) reduced caloric intake and increased levels of the anorexic hormone cholecystokinin. Using indirect calorimetry as a measure of substrate oxidation, oxytocin resulted in a shift from carbohydrate to fat utilization and improved insulin sensitivity. This study suggests that the efficacy and safety of oxytocin in the treatment of obesity should be further investigated.

A 12-week treatment with the long-acting glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist liraglutide leads to significant weight loss in a subset of women affected by obesity with newly diagnosed polycystic ovary syndrome
Jensterle, M., et al. Hormones, 2015.

The use of liraglutide, the long-acting glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist, in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has not yet been evaluated. A study was conducted in 32 women with obesity and PCOS to determine the effects on body weight when receiving either liraglutide 1.2 mg QD sc (n=17) or metformin 1000 mg BID po (n=15) for 12 weeks. The analysis showed that both metformin and liraglutide cause significant decreases in body mass index (BMI), body weight, waist circumference, and whole-body fat mass, with no significant differences between groups. However, in a subgroup of patients (n=9) with insulin resistance, severe obesity, and higher odds ratio for the metabolic syndrome (OR=3.9), patients taking liraglutide had a greater decrease in BMI than those taking metformin. These results suggest that liraglutide treatment may be beneficial for patients with obesity and PCOS, especially if they have a high metabolic risk profile.
