Obesity Medicine e-Weekly
President's Column
By Eric C. Westman, MD, MHS

As we near the end of 2014, it's that time when we all start thinking about what we'd like to accomplish next year. Is getting more involved in your Society on your list? If it's not, it should be.

The ASBP Board of Trustees and staff worked tirelessly for the past few months to improve the structure of the committees. We installed the incoming chairpersons to lead each committee for a one-year term. We established which board members will serve on each committee as board liaisons to report back to the board about their committee's progress. Under the new system, committees will be more efficient, more accountable, and better able to produce results. Best of all, there's something to meet everyone's interests!

If you want to network with others who share your passion for pediatrics, try out the Pediatric Obesity Committee. If you want to impact the next generation of medical professionals, consider joining the Medical School Curriculum Committee. If you want to help with planning future continuing medical education (CME) programs, become a member of a CME program sub-committee. These and other committees and their descriptions are available online.

We streamlined the process for joining committees. Committee participation is exclusive to members; those interested in joining one or more committees must complete an application and submit it to ASBP for review. (One application per committee.) Those accepted into their desired committees will be assigned tasks from the committee chairperson. Committees will meet biannually at conferences and hold regular conference calls to track progress between meetings.

We're holding an enrollment period from now until Dec. 12 to help you accomplish the first item on your New Year's to-do list. I strongly encourage you to apply for a committee and contribute to the Society's success in 2015!

The ASBP membership committee needs YOU!
ASBP recently established a membership committee to broaden our reach to those health care professionals who may be interested in treating obesity. If ASBP has had a positive impact on your career and you are interested in helping raise awareness about ASBP and building our network of obesity medicine clinicians, we need YOU! Don't let the fear of being over-committed keep you from getting involved; your level of participation is up to you. Committee members will participate in a variety of outreach efforts, including communicating with new or lapsed members, serving as ambassadors during lunches at Obesity Basic Medical Treatment courses, and brainstorming new ways to raise awareness about ASBP and optimize membership benefits. If you would like to learn more about the membership committee, please contact Jenny Seger, MD (committee chairperson); Carl Knopke, MD (board liaison); or Jessica Hoyng (ASBP member services coordinator). To apply for this committee, complete a committee application and follow the instructions on the form for submitting it to ASBP.

Support OTF on Giving Tuesday
What is Giving Tuesday? After a weekend focused on shopping, we dedicate this day for giving back. Today, charities, families, businesses, and students nationwide will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity by giving. In honor of Giving Tuesday, the Obesity Treatment Foundation (OTF) encourages you to find a way for your family, your community, your company, or your organization to give something more. Then, tell everyone you can about how you are giving. Please consider giving to OTF and help us celebrate the third annual Giving Tuesday.

Valencia, W. M. and Florez, H. Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, 2014.
Managing diabetes in the elderly can be a challenge due to a number of other health conditions that may be affecting their quality of life. For example, pain management or improving mobility may take priority over their diabetes. This review article focuses on pharmacologic agents for the treatment of diabetes in older people while considering their functional limitations, psychological issues, and the potential lack of social support and access to care.
Scibora, L. M. Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, 2014.
Bariatric surgery is a powerful treatment for obesity, but it is not without drawbacks. There is a growing body of evidence that suggests significant bone loss may be a side effect of bariatric surgery. Given the changes that can occur with absorption of nutrients and the neuro-hormonal changes, it seems possible that bariatric surgery can lead to bone changes. Studies using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) show profound bone loss in the proximal femur in the year following surgery. However, studies using quantitative computed tomography contradict the DXA findings. The idea that bariatric surgery may have a significant clinical impact on bone mass warrants more studies on the changes in bone structure following bariatric surgery using technology that can accurately determine site-specific changes in bone-mineral density.

Clinical decisions: Testosterone-replacement therapy
Swerdloff, R. and Anawalt, B. D. New England Journal of Medicine, 2014.

Testosterone-replacement therapy is sometimes used as a part of treatment for obesity. The use of testosterone-replacement therapy in aging men is controversial and is often debated, given the concern about associated cardiovascular risks. This article features expert opinions from both sides of the debate.
