Thank you for submitting your healthy Halloween ideas Thank you to everyone who participated in our healthy Halloween ideas contest! The winning idea came from Craig Primack, MD, FACP, FAAP--he recommended to wait until the last minute to buy candy so it's not sitting around the house beforehand, and to either give all leftover candy to the last trick-or-treater or immediately put it in the trunk of the car to give away the day after Halloween. Don't miss your opportunity to participate in more members-only contests, coming soon in future editions of the e-newsletter!

The Obesity Treatment Foundation (OTF) helps keep you up to date on current obesity research! Each week, OTF publishes a brief overview of three recent studies so you can be in the know, even during your busiest days. Click the titles below to view the full articles, and please consider supporting OTF so we can continue to provide you with updates on the latest research.
Blundell, J. E., et al. Obesity Facts, 2014.
The use of body mass index (BMI) as a marker for obesity has been debated for more than a decade. There are clear weaknesses to using it to define obesity, and these weaknesses have been extensively described and almost universally acknowledged; however, many key opinion leaders have not necessarily accepted its shortcomings. This review article describes the fundamental nature of obesity and considers the characterization of its diagnosis.
Bays, H. Curr Opin Endocrinol Diabetes Obes, 2014.
Rutten, G. M., et al. Int J Behav Nutr Phys Act, 2014.
The likelihood that patients affected by obesity will maintain higher levels of physical activity and healthier dietary behavior increases when they are more intrinsically motivated to change their behavior. Motivational interviewing may increase the chances of a patient adhering to a lifestyle change. This study examined the effects of lifestyle coaching in a primary care setting and found that autonomous motivation of patients to change increased after four months of a lifestyle coaching intervention.

CMS clarifies reporting rules related to CME payments
Last week, ASBP expressed support of H.R. 5539 by signing on to a letter to Micheal C. Burgess, MD, of the U.S. House of Representatives. This week, ASBP is excited to announce the recent decision by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to redefine and clarify the reporting rules related to continuing medical education (CME) payments under the Physician Payments Sunshine Act. This decision shows that CMS formally recognizes the rigorous standards CME providers must adhere to in planning educational programs if any commercial support is involved; as such, additional formal reporting from providers is not necessary. As an accredited CME provider, ASBP's strict policies and procedures related to commercial support are more than adequate to meet this rule. Learn more about CMS' recent decision.
