Daniels, S. R. and Kelly, A. S. Childhood Obesity, 2014.
The serious health consequences of severe obesity in teens, paired with the poor long-term prognosis and prospect of low quality of life, demand that more serious treatment options that go beyond diet and lifestyle modifications are made available. This editorial emphasizes the need for better access to specialty medical weight-management programs, pharmacotherapy and weight-loss surgery for teens affected by severe obesity.
Camilleri, G. M., et al. Journal of Nutrition, 2014.

The idea of emotional eating (EmE) implies that overeating can occur in response to negative emotions. To test this theory, a study was conducted to examine the association between EmE and consumption of energy-dense snack food, while also assessing the influence of sex and depressive symptoms. The study found a positive association between EmE and energy-dense food intake, which was influenced by sex and depressive symptomatology. In women, the presence of depressive symptoms exacerbated this association. However, there was a significant positive association observed in men without depressive symptoms but not in men with depressive symptoms. This study suggests that individual psychologic states should be considered when aiming to decrease unhealthy dietary habits, especially in women.

Men with hypogonadism and obesity, with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus, lose weight and show improvement in cardiovascular risk factors when treated with testosterone: An observational study

Haidera, A., et al. Obesity Research & Clinical Practice, 2014.

Obesity causes a lowering of serum testosterone, and low serum testosterone levels have profound negative effects on body composition and a number of other metabolic variables. A study was conducted to determine if restoring serum testosterone to normal levels in men with hypogonadism would be beneficial for weight loss and metabolic syndrome. Although there is no consensus as to the normal range of testosterone, data suggest that the normal range is between 12 and 40 nanomoles per liter (nmol/L) for adult men. Men received 1000 milligrams of parenteral testosterone undecanoate, administered at baseline for six weeks and every 12 weeks thereafter for up to five years. The treatment led to significant decreases in waist circumference, weight and body mass index. Serum glucose, HbA1c, lipid profiles and blood pressure improved significantly as well. Normalizing serum testosterone in men affected by obesity may be helpful in improving their metabolic parameters.
