Thong, K. Y., et al. British J of Diabetes & Vascular Disease, July 2014.
Injectable glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1ras) promote weight loss and lower glucose in people with type 2 diabetes. In the U.K., the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists conducted two nationwide reviews on the use of exenatide twice daily and liraglutide once daily and reported that many clinicians deviated from national guidelines. In this report, data from both reviews (n=12,955 patients with type 2 diabetes) was used to evaluate these treatment decisions, critically appraise the national guidelines and formulate new recommendations for the use of GLP-1ras.
Herring, L. Y., et al. Clinical Obesity, July 2014.
A randomized, controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of adding either aerobic training (AT) or resistance training (RT) to a multidisciplinary teamed educational weight-management program on the health-related fitness of individuals with morbid obesity. AT and RT undertook three 60-minute moderate-intensity exercise sessions weekly for 12 weeks; the control group (CON) undertook usual care alone. Both exercise conditions caused improvements compared to CON in the shuttle-walk test and the triceps skin-fold, as well as with self-efficacy and interest and enjoyment. RT displayed additional improvements compared to CON in body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, competence, biceps skin-fold and medial calf skin-fold. No significant differences were observed between exercise modalities.
Borsoi, L., et al. Obesity Facts, July 2014.
Cushing's syndrome (CS) is extremely rare in patients with morbid obesity. This case report describes a patient who was admitted to the ward of the clinical division of endocrinology and metabolism at the Medical University of Vienna in preparation for bariatric surgery. Preoperative work-up revealed CS due to an adrenal adenoma. The patient underwent unilateral adrenalectomy followed by bariatric surgery six months later. Since undiagnosed CS might result in severe perioperative complications in a population already at increased risk, this case report underlines the importance of careful endocrine evaluation in patients with morbid obesity.
