Schumann, M., et al. Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, February 2014.
The incorporation of endurance and strength training exercise to a training plan has beneficial health effects; however, the order in which these activities are completed may have an effect on improvement in overall fitness. Researchers examined the effect of training order on body composition and lipids after 24 weeks of either endurance then strength training or strength training then endurance two to three times per week. The study resulted in no difference in overall fitness after 24 weeks, regardless of the order in which the exercises were completed. The two groups of men achieved the same significant increases in aerobic capacity and lean muscle mass whether they completed the endurance activity or the weight lifting first in their weekly workouts. No significant changes in body fat or blood lipids were observed in either of the two groups at week 24.
Vissers, D., et al. Obesity Reviews, April 2014.

Urinary incontinence (UI) has a significantly negative impact on quality of life. This condition affects about 24 percent of women older than 40. Overweight and obesity may be part of the etiological pathway of UI; therefore, the effect of weight loss on UI was examined. Data from women who participated in non-surgical weight-loss interventions (diet, exercise, medication or a combination of each) were included in a meta-analysis to determine how UI changes with weight loss. The meta-analysis revealed that there is a significant decrease in UI with weight loss, although the limited number of studies did not allow the analysis to determine how weight loss affected the different types of UI. This study provides evidence that a non-surgical weight-loss intervention (diet, exercise, medication or a combination of each) has the potential to improve UI and should be considered part of standard practice in the management of UI in women affected by overweight.

Venditti, E. M., et al. Int J Behav Nutr Phys Act, February 2014.
Based on U.K. guidelines, sulfonylurea is often added to metformin following failure of metformin monotherapy; however, dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4) inhibitors are an alternate option because they have similar glucose-lowering effects but lower risk of hypoglycemia or weight gain. In addition, the safety of sulfonylureas has some concerns. A study was conducted in about 34,000 patients to compare the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and mortality for combination therapies with metformin and either sulfonylureas (SU) or DPP-4 inhibitors. The study found that when added to metformin, there was an increase in all-cause mortality and MACE in patients treated with SU compared to those treated with DPP-4 inhibitors. The study could not show if the differences in risk were due to adverse effects of SU or to beneficial effects of DPP-4 inhibitors. Long-term outcomes should be considered when deciding on a treatment approach.
