Astbury, N. M., et al. Am J Clin Nutr, May 2014.
Snack choices may be a key determinant in the success of a weight-loss program due to their potential effects on satiety. A snack bar containing whey protein and polydextrose (PPX)--both known to enhance short-term satiety--was compared to an energy-matched snack bar; appetite, energy intake (EI), and metabolic and endocrine responses were recorded. Bars were consumed as a mid-morning snack for 14 days in a double-blind, randomized, crossover design. Consuming the PPX snack led to significantly lower daily EI and lower glucose and ghrelin. Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and peptide tyrosine-tyrosine (PYY) responses were higher when consuming the PPX snack. Greater suppression of ghrelin and higher post-prandial plasma PYY and GLP-1 have been associated with lower subjective appetite ratings and reduced voluntary food intake, which may explain the lower energy intake in this study. Incorporating snacks that contain whey protein and polydextrose may be beneficial in a weight-management program.
Giordano, S. & Victorzon, M. Obesity Surgery, May 2014.

Recent data suggest that even a small amount of pre-operative weight loss can improve post-operative outcomes of laparoscopic roux-en-y gastric bypass (LRYGB). Many candidates for bariatric surgery must lose some weight as a prerequisite for getting insurance to cover the surgery, but the evidence that pre-operative weight loss may improve some post-operative outcomes is inconsistent due to the limited number and quality of studies in this field. A recent study evaluated the efficacy and complications of LRYGB in patients who lost less than 5 percent, between 5 and 10 percent, or more than 10 percent of their weight before surgery. The study found that the groups with greater pre-operative weight loss had fewer complications, shorter operative time and shorter hospital stay. Furthermore, the amount of pre-operative weight loss was significantly correlated to the subsequent post-operative weight loss outcomes after one year.

Venditti, E. M., et al. Int J Behav Nutr Phys Act, February 2014.
A group-facilitated program was implemented in the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) to provide a model for cost-effective diabetes prevention. The kinds of barriers DPP participants faced and the individualized approaches lifestyle coaches used to facilitate adherence were evaluated. The top weight-loss barriers included problems with self-monitoring, social cues, vacations and holidays, and too little physical activity. The biggest barriers to engaging in physical activity were vacations and holidays, time management, internal cues (such as mood), illness and motivation. Of the 1,076 participants, the majority of the weight-loss barriers were associated with younger age, greater obesity at baseline, and non-Caucasian ethnicity.

american-flag-wavy.jpg AMA Advocacy Update now available
The April 16 issue of the American Medical Association (AMA) Advocacy Update newsletter is now available for download by clicking here.
A note about the AMA: Remember, your membership in the Society includes representation from the only obesity medicine-focused medical specialty society with a seat in the
AMA House of Delegates. It is important we retain enough ASBP-member physicians who are also members of the AMA, or we risk losing our seat. If we lost our seat, we lose our ability to influence AMA policy, such as last year's victory in the fight for obesity being recognized as a disease. Click here to learn more.
