Siahpush, M., et al. Obesity, February 2014.
Prolonged financial stress was measured in 2008 and 2009 and was correlated to obesity in 2010. Financial stress was found to predict obesity, as the risk of being affected by obesity was 20 percent higher among people who experienced financial stress in earlier years. This association was independent of income level and constant across all income categories. Addressing skills associated with money management may be an important dimension in obesity prevention.
Fan, L., et al. Int'l J. of Obesity, February 2014.
The melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) has a central role in weight regulation. MC4R activation decreases food intake and elevates metabolic rate. A defect in the MC4R leads to a lack of satiety, extreme continuous hyperphagia, a decline in energy utilization, and consequently leads to severe early onset obesity. This systematic review focuses on MC4R agonists that have potential as future pharmacological obesity treatments. There are currently no effective clinical treatments for MC4R-deficient patients affected by obesity, although MC4R agonists are being developed and are entering phase I and II trials.
Eslamparast, T., et al. AJCN, March 2014.
The gut microbiota--the billions of bacteria that reside within the human gastrointestinal tract--may be involved in liver disorders. A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted to determine if consumption of probiotics in addition to lifestyle modifications (diet and exercise), had a positive effect on patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Fifty-two patients with NAFLD were supplemented twice daily for 28 weeks with either a synbiotic or a placebo capsule. Both groups were advised to follow an energy-balanced diet and physical activity recommendations. The study found that synbiotic supplementation in addition to lifestyle modification was superior to lifestyle modification alone for the treatment of NAFLD. The supplement led to a greater attenuation of inflammatory markers in the body, which may have contributed to the enhanced effect.
