Obesity Updates: Click titles to view articles
Temmerman, J. C. and Friedman, A. N. Nutrition & Diabetes, November 2013.
Obesity is associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The progression of NAFLD to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis may indicate the need for liver transplantation; however, obesity can complicate liver transplantation. The optimal weight-loss strategy for these patients is unknown. An oral abstract presentation at the Society's conference in Phoenix was recently published and reports the use of a modified very-low-calorie diet (VLCD) in patients awaiting liver transplant. The report confirms that VLCDs in patients with end-stage liver disease can be safe and effective in reducing weight, facilitating liver transplantation listing and possibly improving liver damage.
Wu, L., et al. Metabolism, November 2013.
Consuming walnuts may reduce risk for coronary heart disease (CHD), but the effects on lipid and glucose metabolism and inflammation is not known. A randomized, controlled crossover study was conducted to test whether consumption of 43 grams of walnuts per day with a controlled Western diet affected risk factors for CHD. The study showed that although eight weeks of consuming walnuts did not affect inflammation or glucose metabolism, there was an improvement in non-HDL cholesterol and apoliproprotein B, which may partly explain how walnuts are associated with reduced risk of CHD.
Yanovski, S. Z. and Yanovski, J. A. JAMA, November 2013.
A systematic review of medications approved for obesity treatment in the United States was conducted and included a discussion of off-label use and considerations for obesity medication use in clinical practice. The authors found a number of medications are used for obesity treatment, and medications approved for long-term obesity treatment, when used with lifestyle intervention, lead to greater weight loss than a placebo.

AMA Advocacy Update now available
The Nov. 13 issue of the American Medical Assocation (AMA) Advocacy Update newsletter is now available for your download by clicking here.
A note about the AMA... Remember, your membership in the Society includes representation from the only obesity medicine-focused medical specialty society with a seat in the AMA House of Delegates. It is important we retain enough ASBP member physicians who are also members of the AMA, or we risk losing our seat. If we lose our seat, we lose our ability to influence AMA policy, such as this summer's victory in the fight for obesity being recognized as a disease. Click here to learn more.
