Luo, J. et al. JAMA, July 2013.
Data from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) was analyzed to assess the association between smoking cessation, weight gain and subsequent coronary heart disease (CHD) risk among post-menopausal women with and without diabetes. Smoking cessation was associated with a lower risk of CHD among post-menopausal women with and without diabetes. Weight gain following smoking cessation weakened this association, especially in women with diabetes who gained 5 kg or more.

Morena, J.P. et al. Nutrition Research, July 2013.
Currently, 39 percent of Mexican- American children are classified as overweight or obese, and Mexican American adults have a high rate of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Specific food choices, specifically nut consumption, may play a role in the weight status of this minority group. Children were classified as being either a peanut consumer (PC; n = 100) or a non-peanut consumer (NPC; n = 162), based on completion of a food frequency questionnaire. Children were considered to be peanut consumers if they reported eating peanuts or peanut butter at least once during the previous week. A subset of the sample (17 PC; 40 NPC) agreed to provide a blood sample for lipid analysis. Analyses showed that children who ate peanuts or peanut butter were less likely to be overweight or obese than children in the non-peanut consumer group. These children also had significantly lower low-density lipoprotein and total cholesterol levels.

Lennerz, B.S., et al. Am J Clin Nutr., June 2013.

The effects of the glycemic index (GI) on brain activity was examined using functional magnetic resonance imaging four hours after test meals. Foods that contained processed carbohydrates, such as white bread and chips, triggered heightened levels of activity in areas of the brain involved with reward and cravings.
