Obesity Updates: Click titles to view articlesDietary fats and health: Dietary recommendations in the context of scientific evidence
Lawrence, G.D.Adv Nutr. May 2013.
The Framingham Heart Study reported that high-serum cholesterol was a major risk factor for coronary heart disease, and there has since been an aggressive campaign in the medical community to decrease serum cholesterol. Dietary saturated fats and dietary cholesterol were believed to cause an increase in serum total cholesterol, as well as low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and thereby increase the risk of heart disease. The role of dietary fats in cardiovascular disease and many other diseases is complex. This review pleads for a re-evaluation of existing dietary recommendations that focus on minimizing dietary saturated fats. Therapeutic options in pediatric non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: Current status and future directions
Vajro, P., et al. Ital J Pediatr. Oct. 2012.
Therapy for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in children is mainly focused on lifestyle interventions; but, unfortunately, results are often unsatisfactory. No agreement exists on NAFLD management of obese children who are not successful at lifestyle modifications. This article reviews current NAFLD treatments and possible novel options in the pediatric age group. Long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids may be beneficial for reducing obesity-a review
Buckley, J.D., Howe, P.R.Nutrients. Dec. 2010. Numerous research studies have been directed at investigating the benefits of the long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC n-3 PUFA), notably eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), for improving cardiovascular health and reducing cardiovascular disease risk. However, little attention has been paid to the potential for EPA and DHA to reduce obesity. This review provides a detailed examination of the potential effects of LC n-3 PUFA on lean tissue accretion as a mechanism for obesity reduction.
