OH WHAT A NIGHT! REPUBLICANS GAIN CONTROL OF U.S. SENATE, MAY WIN COLORADO LEGISLATURE BUT FINAL VOTE TALLIES NOT IN
|
In a night reminiscent of that song by the Jersey Boys it was also a night of firsts! Republicans grabbed control of the United States Senate, the first time since 2006, and appear to have gained control of the Colorado State Legislature for the first time since 2004. Following a nationwide trend of voter opposition to President Obama's policies, Congressman Cory Gardner made history by becoming the first Colorado candidate to unseat an incumbent U. S. Senator since 1978, with a convincing win over Senator Mark Udall early in the evening. Republicans also retained control of offices for Secretary of State, Treasurer, and Attorney General, and barely missed winning all four statewide races for the first time since 1970. Although Republican challenger Bob Beauprez led throughout most of the night, a late surge has put Governor John Hickenlooper over the top. CMA backed candidates generally fared very well; winning more than 80% of the races in which our political committees contributed. If the continuing vote count holds, Republicans will control the legislature, with unofficial results giving an 18-17 majority to Republicans in the state Senate and a 33-32 majority in the House. Jefferson County proved to be a deciding factor as Republicans Tim Neville and Laura Woods took formerly Democratic Senate seats. In Adams County Republican Beth Martinez Humenik apparently defeated Democrat and former House member Judy Solano. Several House seats flipped from Democrat to Republican with wins in House Districts 17, 30, 31, and 59 and a fifth win awaiting possible recount in House District 3. Republican gains sent a strong message about voter angst on energy policy and many issues. The final votes are not yet in, however, and the difference in some races is less than 50 votes. Congressman Mike Coffman (CD6) handily defeated challenger Andrew Romanoff and incumbents retained control of all other congressional seats, leaving a 4-3 Republican balance in the delegation. Several of the races are still to close to call and CMA will provide future updates on the key races. | Floyd Ciruli |
For those who bet on Colorado becoming a solid "blue" or "red" state, noted political analyst Floyd Ciruli had this to tell readers of the Denver Post: Colorado is still a battleground state. The fastest growing bloc of voters is unaffiliated and they will sway the elections next week. His most recent column, which appeared in last Sunday's edition of the Denver Post Perspective section, warns voters to expect a long night on November 4 before the races are decided. Click here to read article.
All eyes are on Colorado this election year, and all CMA members will have the opportunity to hear Ciruli's post-election recap at the CMA membership forum on Friday, November 14.
Registration expires Tuesday, November 11th so reserve your place today!
