CMA DENVER POST OP ED: EPA RULE IS BAD
 FOR COLORADO

In a guest commentary published in the Sunday, July 27 edition of the Denver Post, CMA President Stuart Sanderson took aim at the EPA's carbon proposal, stating that it would result in job losses and higher  electricity rates in Colorado and the United States.  And, he added, it won't do a thing to reverse the effects of "climate change."

COURT RULING A MAJOR SETBACK TO ANTI-FRACKING, ANTI-MINING ACTIVISTS

In what is a major defeat for anti-mining and anti-fracking activists, a district judge in Longmont has overturned that city's restrictions on oil and gas development.   The court ruled that state law preempts local regulation.   In a case with potential implications for mining, the court relied on CMA v. Board of Commissioners of Summit County, a 2009 Colorado Supreme Court decision which upheld a challenge to a local ban on mining.   The court ruled that patchwork bans would disrupt the General Assembly's intention to set uniform statewide standards for mining and reclamation.

The ruling is the latest in a string of setbacks to efforts to ban mineral development.    One group had to withdraw Initiative 75 (which would allow local governments to eliminate the rights of any corporation to do business) for lack of sufficient public support.   And Governor Hickenlooper recently announced that efforts to negotiate legislation to resolve the other remaining initiatives, 88 (establishing setback requirements for oil and gas operations) and 89 (establishing an "environmental" bill of rights), had concluded and that there would be no special session.    At a press conference held the next day, Hickenlooper endorsed the efforts of Coloradans for Responsible Reform, the group formed in opposition to the measure.   CMA is a member of CFRR.

CMA, INDUSTRY TAKE AIM AT EPA REGULATIONS

CMA  condemned the Obama Administration's proposed regulations mandating the reduction of carbon dioxide from existing generating stations, saying that the new rules will cause extensive job losses and economic harm to America. They will also hurt coal dependent states like Colorado, which generates 65% of its electricity from clean coal.

CMA - ON THE ROAD AND ON THE AIR THIS SUMMER

CCTV - In an interview broadcast on China Television, Sanderson took aim at EPA regulations that apply  to existing sources, pointing out that they will accomplish nothing in the way of reducing the alleged effects of climate change, but will cause plenty of pain here at home in Colorado and the U.S. in terms of lost jobs and higher electricity rates.

Wyoming - Before a packed house at the annual meeting of the Wyoming Mining Association, Colorado Mining Association President Stuart Sanderson warned WMA members to keep a close watch what is happening in other states, especially in Colorado, where CMA and the business community are fighting anti-fracking ballot initiatives that will also impact mining, if enacted.   In remarks reported in the Wyoming Business Report (see link below), Sanderson warned of the "domino effect that local bans could set in motion for state economies.   "You might as well close the door on Colorado's economy," Sanderson said, "if local governments gain the authority to ban any business practice with which they happen to disagree."

Utah - CMA President Stuart Sanderson testified at a hearing before the Environmental Protection Agency on the future and fate of the Bonanza power plant.   In comments submitted to the agency, Sanderson told the EPA that changing the rules of the game and adding costly new regulations would threaten the plants future and jobs of hundreds of miners at the Deserado Mine in Rangely.   For a copy of CMA's comments, click here.

Experts In Corrosion Protection For The Mining Industry

Corrosion is a critical issue in mining, due to extreme environmental conditions where mining operations are done, heavy duty machinery, the action of acids and other chemical products used in production processes.

A proper anti-corrosive protection ensures a longer lasting service-life of your assets, cost reduction in downtime due to system failure and less accident hazards.

Sherwin Williams is a leader manufacturer of paints and coatings for corrosion protection in mining, based on a long and successful experience in major mining projects in Latin America and worldwide.  The best specialized professional team will help you make your best decision on protection needs.

SME's CRITICAL MINERALS CONFERENCE

The Critical Minerals Conference will be held August 3-5 at the Westin Hotel in downtown Denver. It's not too late to register for the event!

Attendees will hear from speakers from around the world who will talk about government's role in the management and oversight of critical and strategic minerals. Key international presenters include:

  • Gus Gunn from the British Geological Survey
  • Hiroyuki Katayama of Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation
  • Leonard J. Surges, Doug Panagapko and Brian Smith of Natural Resources Canada
  • Ian Chalmers of Alkane Resources (Australia)

These experts, and many more, will be talking about national strategies, supply and risk management, creating opportunities and the process of producing these minerals defined by the government as critical or strategic.

Other topics to be addressed in the presentation include the sustainability of critical minerals, the geology of these materials, the role of recycling and supply chain dynamics for critical minerals.

If you are involved in critical mineral production or management, you'll want to attend this meeting. Governments around the world are taking action to oversee the accessibility to these materials. You'll want to be on the front of this issue before you learn how it's effected you.
