NYACOP - "nigh-a-cop" - What is NYACOP? First off it's a true acronym in that it is pronounced as a word or words, as above. The initials stand for National Young Artists Competition in Organ Performance.

I must confess that in the past I didn't pay too much attention to performance competitions since someone of my limited ability would never be much of a participant and the congregations I've served would probably not be considered an attractive venue for either competition or recital afterwards. But looking at the big picture we can see that by encouraging young artists we give the gift of outstanding and inspirational music to our communities at large. This generates interest which can spread like a good deed paid forward. After time it shows up in our own churches and schools in the form of the person who heard a terrific recital at the big church downtown and now has become your biggest backer and enthusiast. World class organ music, above and beyond the normal weekly fare, as good as that may already be, becomes something that people remember and are willing to support in their own churches and schools.

NYACOP began 64 years ago as a next step from the regional competitions, now known as the Quimby Competition or Regional Competitions for Young Organists (RCYO, "Ricky-O.") The NYACOP competition is held every other year with the final round held at the national AGO convention. Karen McFarlane established the Lilian Murtagh Memorial Prize in 1982 in memory of her colleague Lilian Murtagh. Karen McFarlane Artists provides a comprehensive management service package on behalf of the winner for a two year period.
Hope to see you at the recital of Jonathan Rudy, this year's NYACOP winner. Friday 11/14 at 7:30 PM at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

TODAY IN CLASSICAL MUSIC HISTORY

On November 13, 1868, Gioachino Rossini, composer of The Barber of Seville and many other operas, died at age 76. Rossini did compose several sacred works, including the delightful Petite Messe Solenelle, written in 1863 and described by the composer as "the last of my péchés de vieillesse" (sins of old age). Rossini specified twelve singers in all, with the soloists doubling the SATB chorus, and scored it for two pianos and harmonium. (The second piano plays only occasionally, and then merely doubles the first.) He later orchestrated the work, and it is this version performed in the video below. (This is the complete Mass, conducted by Ricardo Chailly.)
