From the Dean

On Saturday at 1:00 PM Robert Gary Professor Emerita from the Cincinnati Conservatory will be presenting a workshop at Church of the Covenant on the topic of Body Mapping. At first reading this sounds more like a medical diagnostic topic than a musical one but that's not the case. The little bit I know about Body Mapping comes from some reading about The Alexander Technique. F. M. Alexander was an actor who struggled with chronic laryngitis and began a study of human movement as a way to overcome his vocal problems. http://www.alexandertechnique.com/fma.htm

His ideas can be applied to many areas of life; acting, sports, regular daily activities, and, for our interests, musical performance. Andover Educators is an organization that applies these principals specifically in music. . Though one can learn a great deal by reading, this is one of those practices that is best learned from a qualified teacher.

Dr. Gary is licensed through Andover Educators. Her interest in movement began as a way of dealing with effects of childhood polio. More information about her can be found at this link.  We're fortunate to have her expertise available and this promises to be a wonderful experience.

Saturday, November 1 - 1 to 3:30 pm
Church of the Covenant, 11205 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland

What Every Organist Needs to Know about the Body, or Body Mapping for Organists, is intended to help organists learn to play the instrument with proper use of the body. We will talk about body structure, body mapping, and balance. There will be a demonstration of "Movements Organists Make", using music examples from Bach to Liszt. A few quotes: "the keyboard is flat, but we are not", "don't keep your knees together!", "move in the direction the music moves", "there is no such thing as your waist". Assisting in the presentation will be a small skeleton named Fred.

Part I Basic Concepts; the Body Map; the Places of Balance
Part II Demonstration: _Movements Organists Make_
Part III Working with participants at the organ

Dr. Roberta Gary is Professor Emerita of Organ at College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. She presents organ recitals and master classes throughout the US, Canada, and Europe represented by Independent Concert Artists.

Dr. Gary's interest in movement began as a way of dealing with effects of childhood polio and led to certification as an Andover Educator, along with husband Thom Miles. She has contributed substantial information for organists to the book "What Every Pianist Needs to Know About theBody" by Thomas Mark. Dr. Gary's_Body Mapping_ workshops are designed to benefit all keyboard players.

"Inestimable Value" David Higgs, co-chair, Keyboard Department, Eastman School of Music
"The day-long course was of inestimable value to students and faculty. Clear and direct, Roberta and Thom's presentation made a lasting impression on all of us. Their ability to diagnose the causes of various technical problems was brilliant, and, in a remarkably short time, they were able to effect substantive changes in the students' ease and fluency of using their bodies at the instrument."

TODAY IN CLASSICAL MUSIC HISTORY

On October 30, 1864, Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, one of America's greatest patrons of music was born. She died November 4, 1953. Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge's father was a wealthy wholesale dealer in Chicago. She was musically talented and studied piano as well as composition. Her husband was a physician who died of syphilis contracted from a patient during surgery. She inherited a considerable amount of money from her parents and decided to spend it on promotion of chamber music, a mission she continued to carry out until her death at the age of 89 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Due to her husband's profession, she also gave financial support to medical institutions.

Among the composers whose works she commissioned, via her partnership with the Library of Congress were Samuel Barber, Bela Bartok, Benjamin Britten, Igor Stravinsky, Arnold Schoenberg, and Ottorino Respighi. Despite her interest in "difficult" modernist music, she refused to support the work of Charles Ives. The work of the Coolidge Foundation at the Library of Congress continues to this day.
