Let It Go

During the annual meeting at the Boston AGO convention, Executive Director, James Thomashower encouraged us to all learn one piece this coming year.  What piece was that?  Not a Bach trio sonata or a Brahms chorale prelude, but a bit of movie music popular with children - "Let It Go" from the movie Frozen.  There is absolutely no shortage of exposure to this one, a tune that gets in your head and stays there.  I ordered my copy and went to work arranging the piano reduction to play on the organ.

Flash forward to the start of our church pre-school a few weeks ago.  I was finishing up a morning practice session and packing up to leave when in came the two and three year olds with their teacher.  They heard me playing and wanted to come in and see and hear.  I put my shoes back on and was feeling good that I had something special to play just for them.  The children and teachers responded with smiles, hand claps, and excitement.  One boy wanted to come closer to check out the organ so when I was done I let him sit on the bench and play some sounds.

Over the next weeks the teachers commented how much the children enjoyed their experience.  I was glad I had something to play that they could relate to immediately.   It's a joy to step outside the musical comfort zone and plant seeds for the next generation of organists and lovers of organ music.

PHANTOM AT THE OPERA AT SEVERANCE HALL

Tuesday, October 28 - 7:30 pm Severance Hall [NOTE THE CORRECTED TIME - not 8:30!!]

Lon Chaney as the Phantom

"Phantom of the Opera" silent movie accompanied by organist, Todd Wilson. Film projected on a large screen above the Severance Hall stage. Film music played and improvised on Severance Hall's Norton Memorial Organ which will be onstage.

Experience the terror and fun of Halloween with one of the greatest horror films ever made and live accompaniment improvised by acclaimed organist, Todd Wilson. In this classic 1925 movie about romance and murder, the love-obsessed Phantom (Lon Chaney Sr.) haunts the Paris Opera House in pursuit of Christine (Mary Philbin). The fully improvised accompaniment features Severance Hall's mighty Norton Memorial Organ, considered one of the finest concert organs ever built.

Cleveland AGO is interested in supporting the public use of the concert organ at Severance Hall . Our chapter is reserving a block of tickets for our members in the center section of the hall and close to the stage. The discounted group price is $40. (regularly $50.)
