A personal note - My first exposure to the AGO came from my mother, Hazel Guyer, who departed this life last Tuesday at the age of 94.  She was a graduate of the New England Conservatory where she studied piano.  She taught, accompanied, and directed choirs her entire life.  In her early fifties while living in Denver she decided to begin organ study and found a wonderful teacher in Austin Lovelace.  He introduced my mother to the world of the organ, the organ community, and the AGO.  From then on she played in many different places over the years including churches and a synagogue.  She encouraged me to study organ when I began my college years at Westminster Choir College.  Her love of music and her influence continue on.

CONCERTS OF INTEREST

Weekly Tuesday lunchtime concerts at Church of the Covenant. See the schedule

September 26, 27, 28. See concert details. The Flower of Flanders: Masterpieces of Renaissance Polyphony. Quire Cleveland brings you glorious music by the greatest composers of the Renaissance: Josquin Desprez ("The Prince of Music"), Guillaume DuFay, Roland de Lassus, and many more! These composers from Flanders dominated music in the same way that Italians dominated the visual arts. Giants like Leonardo, Michelangelo, Brunelleschi, and Tintoretto had their counterparts in DuFay, Josquin, Willært, and Lassus, and a remarkable number of other sublimely talented composers. They were trained in the choir schools of the North, and often drawn to the brilliant courts of Renaissance Italy. Come hear the flower of their music: exquisite motets of contrapuntal mastery, astonishing variety, and sonorous splendor!

September 28, 2:00pm. Salzedo Harp Duo: Nancy Lendrim and Jody Guinn, Sunday, September 28 at 2:00 p.m. The Salzedo Harp Duo, Nancy Lendrim and Jody Guinn, performs at the Church of the Saviour 2537 Lee Road in Cleveland Heights, one block north of Fairmount Blvd. The church has free parking and is handicapped-accessible.

THIS WEEK IN CLASSICAL MUSIC HISTORY

On September 20, 1967, French composer, organ, harmonium and cello player Henri Mulet (1878-1967), composer, died at 88. His farther was the maître de-chapelle of the neo-Byzantine Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur in Paris. According to the article in Wikipedia, Henri Mulet was an enigmatic character, and somewhat eccentric. Because of his lack of correspondence, few friends, and solitary lifestyle, information regarding his life is limited. Although he lived for 88 years, he composed music only during about 15 of them. Among his works are the Esquisses Byzantines (10 pieces), 1914-19. This group of pieces was inspired by "elements" of the Sacré-Coeur Basilica in Paris. They are inscribed "En mémoire de la Basilique du Sacré-Coeur de Montmartre, 1914-1919". They were published in 1920 by Alphonse Leduc.

In this video Stephen Tharp plays "Tu es Petra" from the Esquisses Byzantines at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York.
