From the Dean

Fern Jennings

Dear Colleagues,

This is my final "From the Dean" column to you. It has been, for the most part, a rewarding two years. The most frustrating part of my tenure was the loss of our non-profit status and the subsequent refiling that necessitated. I am grateful to Don Jackson for doing the yeoman's job on preparing the application. I must say that of this writing we have not yet received that reinstatement. I have been told that this is an expected wait time for the IRS and to be patient.

Otherwise, I am grateful for the assistance and support I received from your Chapter Officers and Executive and Standing Committees. I am grateful for Sub-Dean Barbara MacGregor's expertise and detail in planning our program year. Treasurer Don Jackson has paid our bills and kept our records in a professional manner. Secretary Jan Jones has kept our meeting records in an efficient manner. Special thanks to our Registrar, Chris Toth, who has maintained our membership records and kept us up to date with the transition to the new national system. Webmaster and Newsletter Producer, Tim Robson, has been of great assistance in our chapter communications. Our expertly produced Yearbook was produced by Grant Wiswell. Not only is it a great source of information, it was funded entirely by advertisements.

Two committees that were active this year were the Scholarship Review Committee and the Web-site Committee. The Scholarship Committee consisting of Cliff Hill, Barbara MacGregor, Annie Kaschube, Brain Wentzel, and Tim Robson reviewed our scholarship policy and with input from Scholarship Chair, Carol Neff, recommended the policy which was accepted by the Executive Committee. The Web-site Committee began by assessing the needs of the chapter for an updated web-site. They will continue their work in the coming year and present a plan to best meet the needs of the chapter in this regard. The Committee consists of Paul Guyer, Brian Wentzel and Matt Skitszki.

Sunday we will meet for our Annual Meeting and review the year and install new officers. For those who may be joining us only for the meeting that will happen at about 5:30 pm at Lakewood Congregational Church, 1375 W. Clifton Blvd., Lakewood. I hope to see many of you there.

Best to you,

Fern

SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED

We received four scholarship applications this year.  Auditions were held at the Chapel at the Berea United Methodist Church.  Dean Fern Jennings, Committee Chair Carol Neff, and Pedals, Pipes and Pizza teacher Brian Wentzel listened to the auditions.  We are pleased to award $250 scholarships to all four applicants.  The checks will be sent to their instructors.   Three of the applicants are high school students who attended the Pedals, Pipes and Pizza program.  The fourth is an adult who studies privately with Peg Limkemann.

Receiving scholarships are  Anna Marshall, Swazi Blue, Taylor Adair, and Elaine Rosenberger.  We wish them great success as they learn to play the King of Instruments!

MEMBER NEWS

Max Bunker, originally scheduled to play on our progressive recital on Sunday, fell at church and injured his leg. He is doing well. Barbara MacGregor has graciously stepped in to play his section of the concert which will feature music for organ and instruments. In addition Max will be celebrating his 60th anniversary as a church musician on June 15 with a tribute at his church.

THIS WEEK IN CLASSICAL MUSIC HISTORY

The English Organist and hymn composer, Arthur Henry Mann was born in 1850. He was the Director of Music at King's College Chapel from 1876-1929, the year of his death. He was the director of the first Lessons and Carols Christmas Eve presentation at King's College in the year 1918. His arrangement of "Once in Royal David's City" is sung every year to begin the service. His best hymn is "Angel's Story" most often sung to "Oh Jesus, I have promised". Here is a link to the hymn played on a beautifully restored 1893 reed organ.
