The Chapter Executive Committee adopted the recommendations of the Scholarship review committee at their meeting on Monday. The new policy reflects a change of focus away from college level scholarships to pre-college and non-traditional scholarships. The committee felt that the biggest need in our community was to introduce young students to the organ and to assist older musicians who might be beginners on the organ. To that end the chapter will focus on providing scholarships of $250 to talented students at this level. With fewer and fewer young people studying organ, one idea is that among the young musicians who attend our Pedals, Pipes and Pizza event some might be encourage to begin study.

Though we have provided these scholarships in the past, we will no longer divide our limited resources among College and Pre-College scholarships. We will still support college level students through our bi-annual Quimby Competition. You will find information below and on our web-site about Pedals, Pipes and Pizza. If you know young keyboard players who might benefit from this program we encourage you to pass along the information. This program has been used successfully in other chapters to introduce young students to the organ. Information and application forms for the scholarships will be available soon on our website.

Don't forget our chapter meeting at Trinity Cathedral on Monday!

To our future organists!

PEDALS, PIPES AND PIZZA

organ pipe & staffSaturday, March 8, at Baldwin Wallace Chapel, Berea

What is Pedals, Pipes and Pizza? It is a National AGO program to introduce young piano students to the organ. Our chapter is co-sponsoring this event with the Conservatory Outreach program of Baldwin Wallace. The program will be Saturday, March 8, from 10 am to 2 pm in the Chapel at BW. It is geared toward Middle School and High School students, ages about 11 to 16, and is free - teachers and parents of the participants are also welcome. AGO is providing pizza and beverages for the for the participants. If you have piano students in your church or friends who teach piano we would be most appreciative if you could email to them the flyer announcing the event and registration form, which can both be downloaded as PDF files at the bottom of the chapter's home page.

Questions? please contact Barbara MacGregor, macmus@roadrunner.com or Nicole Keller, organ Instructor at BW, at nkeller@bw.edu or by phone at 216-310-1694.

TODAY IN CLASSICAL MUSIC HISTORY

On Feb. 7, in 1779 English organist and composer William Boyce died in Kensington. Boyce was one of the foremost composers of English church music. Boyce was a chorister and later organ student at St. Paul's Cathedral. He composed the Anthem "O Be Joyful" to fulfill a requirement for his doctorate in music. In addition to church music Boyce wrote symphonies and Operas. He published a three volume set, Cathedral Music, (1760-73), the first collection of church music to be printed in score. This collection, which covered three centuries, was not superseded until the mid-19th century. Boyce wrote much organ music that is useful to church organist even today. Here is a bracing performance of his Voluntary No. 1 for Trumpet, organ, harpsichord and tympani.
