About seventy-five AGO members, Fairmount church members, friends and music lovers from the community enjoyed a progressive recital at Fairmount Presbyterian Church last Sunday. Our two young recitalists, Mitchell Miller and Emily Meixner exhibited impressive technic and musicality. The concert began in the intimate setting of the Fairmount Chapel where we heard the lovely Charles M. Ruggles 2008 organ. Emily was impressive in her memorized performance of the Bach "Trio Sonata No. 3 in D Minor". Mitchell showed off the various stops of the organ in his performance of Sweelinck's "Soll es Sein- Polish Almande". He concluded this part of the program with Buxtehude's "Praeludium in F-sharp minor".

Next the audience moved to the Fairmount Sanctuary where we heard the church's 100 rank 1996 Schantz organ. A video screen allowed the audience to watch the performers who played from the rear gallery console. Mitchell played a masterful movement III. Allegro Deciso from Dupre's "Evocation". Next was the Franck "Choral No. 2 in B minor" also played with great sensitivity by Mitchell. Emily concluded the program with a first-rate rendition of Durufle's "Prelude and fugue sur le nom d'Alain". Together they performed an organ duet by C.P.E Bach as an encore. It was a delightful ending to a delightful concert.

A reception was enjoyed in the church hall. The offering which benefitted the AGO Scholarship Fund was $603.00. Thank you to everyone who donated! Also a big thank you to Robert Moncrief, Fairmount's Director of Music for hosting the recital and to Sub-Dean Barbara MacGregor for making the arrangements.

Best to you,

Fern

THIS WEEK IN CLASSICAL MUSIC HISTORY
Rorem, Ned
Ned Rorem

On this date in 1985 Ned Rorem's String Symphony received its first performance by the Atlanta Symphony, Robert Shaw conducting. A more notable date was Rorem's 90th birthday on October 23 this past week. This was written up in many publications including this interview in the New York Times,
and this NPR music article which includes song clips and a video. Rorem looks fit and much younger than his 90 years. He is best known for his songs. His works for organ include: A Quaker Reader and View from the Oldest House. Here is a link to "Mary Dyer did hang as a flag" from A Quaker Reader played by Jungjin Kim at the University of Texas. Happy Birthday, Ned!
