I hope to see many of you at our October Chapter Recital this coming Sunday. It is our Young Organist Showcase featuring our 2012 Chapter Quimby competition winner  Mitchell Miller, and our 2012 Scholarship winner Emily Meixner. Mitchell is a second year undergraduate student at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, studying with James David Christie. Emily is a second year Masters student at the Cleveland Institute of Music studying with Todd Wilson. We will hear both of the Fairmount Church organs in this concert which begins at 4:00 pm.

The concert is co-sponsored by Fairmount Church and is open to the public. Robert Moncrief, Fairmount Church's Director of Music, has generously designated that the free-will offering will go to the AGO Scholarship Fund. If you would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to the Chapter Scholarship Fund at this event, write a check to Fairmount Church and put "AGO" in the memo line. Thanks, Bob!

THIS WEEK IN CLASSICAL MUSIC HISTORY

On this date in the year 1633 French composer Jehan Titelouze died. He was considered the first composer of the French organ school. In the year 1588 he was appointed organist of the Cathedral in Rouen. Work on the organ in 1600 by the organ builder Crespin Carlier resulted in what was considered the best organ in France. This instrument came to define the French classical organ. The year 1623 saw publication of Titelouze's Hymnes de l'Eglise, a collection of organ settings of various plainchant hymns to be used during the liturgy. The same year, due to health problems, Titelouze partially retired from his organist position (although he kept the post until his death). In 1626 he published a second organ collection, Le Magnificat, that contained eight Magnificat  settings. Here is Robert Bates playing on a 1630 French organ.  And anther of  Dupre's "Le Tombeau de Titelouze" played at St. Eustache
