It was wonderful to see so many members and friends at the Holtkamp Organ Company tour on Saturday. Many thanks to Chris Holtkamp for his excellent tour and demonstration.

We had a total of 40 people for the tour. In addition to our chapter members we had guests from Akron, Youngstown and Dayton chapters and 5 college organ students. The large group was divided into two sections for tours of the office area, pipe making room, and voicing room. We got to see a demonstration of pipe casting. Chris demonstrated various flute and reed pipes. We viewed a working model of a tracker action. We are fortunate to have this gem in our midst. Despite parking difficulties in the West Side Market area, a large group enjoyed good food and conversation during lunch at the Market Garden Brewery.

Thanks to Sub-Dean Barbara MacGregor for arranging the tour and the lunch. Be sure to mark your calendar for our next chapter event our Young Artist Showcase on October 27.

Best to you,

Fern

TODAY IN CLASSICAL MUSIC HISTORY

In the year 1795 German-English composer and organist John Christopher Smith aka Johann Christoph Schmidt, died in Bath, England. Born in 1712 he became Handel's secretary, musical assistant and amanuensis, when blindness prevented Handel from writing or conducting in his later years. From 1753 to 1759, he conducted Handel's oratorios that were to be performed in those years. The last year where Handel conducted performances of his oratorios was 1752. Handel bequeathed to the Smith family his collection of keyboard instruments in his house at 25 Brook Street. (Wikipedia) Here is a link to a performance of a Suite by Smith:
