This past Sunday the congregation I serve dedicated its religious education teachers. The minister gave a sermon on the importance of religious education and the inclusion of young people in the church. Like many congregations we have Sundays where the children  are included in all or part of the Sanctuary service. Our minister, Daniel Budd, reflected on the participation of children in the worship service: "Here we teach by who we are far more than by anything we say. What is important is for our young people to learn something of what it means to be here, to get a feeling for what is of ultimate concern for us, and to realize the need we all have for quiet and self-recollection.  What is important is that they learn to feel a part of our community as it engages in one of its most central activities."

I keyed in on the part about "quiet and self-recollection". I have been chided by some congregational leaders that the music must be up-tempo and modern (read popular) in order for young people to relate. So I was drawn to this idea that, no, sometimes children need quiet as well.( I certainly did as a child.) What about giving opportunities for children to feel awe and wonder? Returning to my idea of two weeks ago about enchantment, can we as organists foster a feeling of enchantment around the organ and the music we play? Isn't the organ an instrument of enchantment with its complexity and beauty with all of the mysterious knobs and buttons on the console, not to mention the mysterious pipes which may be hidden but whose presence is felt by the sound they produce?

Best to you,

Fern

TODAY IN CLASSICAL MUSIC HISTORY

On this date in the year 1714 Handel's "Te Deum" was given its first performance at St. James Palace to celebrate the safe arrival of Caroline of Ansbach the Princess of Wales. Since Caroline later became Queen as consort of George II, the Te Deum has become known as the "Queen Caroline" Te Deum. George I attended this performance and subsequently doubled Handel's "pension", or salary to four hundred pounds a year. Here is a link to a New College Choir, Oxford performance with the King's Consort
