Perhaps you have seen the news feature "Made in America". On it reporters focus on an industry or product that you can buy that is made in this county. "Made in America" represents an ideal of how to get our populace back to work and restore prosperity in the U.S. There is a local industry here in Cleveland that still makes its product by hand much the way it has for many years. Each of item of its output is individually designed and built to specification. It has remained in the same family for 150 years. That company is the Holtkamp organ company and its product is pipe organs.

I have always found it fascinating to visit a pipe organ shop. My admiration is vast for the craftsmen and women who put together these incredible instruments. The detail from design, to pipe modeling to woodworking and assembling the finished instrument on its site are amazing. Today precision design and power tools are used to create the product but the basic techniques and design aesthetics are handed down generation to generation.

To quote from the company's website: "The Holtkamp firm is much the same today as it was in 1922 when it opened its new factory at 2909 Meyer Avenue. It remains small, employing about twenty skilled craftsmen. In fact the firm may well be of optimum size for the production of pipe organs; large enough to allow the employ of specialists in certain phases of the art of organ building yet small enough for the proprietor to assume a direct control and interest in every phases of the 4 or 6 organs that leave the factory in an average year."

We hope you will join us on the tour of the company as listed below on Saturday, September 28. After we will go up the street to another fine local business, the much newer Market Garden Brewery, for a time of food and fellowship. The registration deadline has been extended and an incorrect link to the Subdean has been fixed. If you tried the link and had your message returned please try again.

NEXT EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING

Monday, October 7, 7:30 PM
Trinity Cathedral, Cleveland

TAKING AN AGO EXAM THIS YEAR?

Last spring the chapter offered rebates to students who took an AGO exam. Two students took advantage of this offer. Emily Meixner and Jarred Sorauf, students of Todd Wilson at the Cleveland Institute of Music, took and passed the CAGO exam.. The Executive Committee has voted to extend this offer to any chamber member, student or regular. The first five members to apply for (and take) a Guild exam will be rebated $100. We hope this will encourage members to take the exams. Information on the Guild exams can be found on the national website http://www.agohq.org/education/index.html. The deadline to take the CAGO exam in November is coming up on September 15. Other dates and the requirements of the exams can be found on the national site as well. Contact Fern Jennings for more information.

CHAGRIN FALLS ECUMENICAL CHOIR TO PERFORM VERDI

On Oct  6 an ecumenical choir with  churches/synagogues/chorales will have an amazing collaborative experience with the Chagrin Valley Film Festival and the Chagrin Studio Orchestra, Steve Eva, conductor. Under Steve's direction, we are going to perform 35 minutes (The Dies Irae section) of the Verdi Requiem following a powerful documentary about 150 prisoners in a concentration camp who sang the entire Requiem by memory in an act of defiance against their captors.

The film/concert is the evening of Sunday, October 6 and a rehearsal will be held Saturday morning, October 5. Everything takes place at the Federated Church, Chagrin Falls.

We would like to invite your choir to participate.   If the entire choir cannot be involved and you have individuals who would like to join us, we will be practicing at The Federated Church every Tuesday from 7:30 to 8:30pm, starting August 27.

The area's best operatic soloists will join us as the quartet of soloists.

TODAY IN CLASSICAL MUSIC HISTORY

French composer and harpsichordist Francois Couperin died on this date in the year 1733.  Primarily remembered as a harpsichordist, Couperin published two Masses for the organ: the Mass for the Parishes and the Mass for the Convents. The selections follow the standard mass settings. The longest is the "Offertoire sur les grands jeux" from the first Mass. It is in a French Overture style. Of the many YouTube performances I liked this one for the quicker tempo. (FJ)
