Jennings, Fern
Fern Jennings

I was practicing some Bach today and as I worked through some knotty areas something David Higgs told a student at a master class came into my mind: "play EVERY note".  To me this means to be aware of each note in an inner voice, or perhaps  really consider  the notes in an easy passage. It means to play each note with intention: attention to the weight of your fingers (or feet), to be intentional about the finger being used, and having in mind how each note fits into a melody line. Since, in spite of my internal admonition to be mindful of every note, my mind tends to wander when I practice, I started to think about other areas of my life this advice could be used. How about in reading? Forget speed reading, but read with attention all the way to the end of a paragraph. Well, some materials might be better skimmed. Diet experts tell us to be mindful of what we eat for better satisfaction. They tell us to stop watching TV or reading while we eat. How about in listening? This one is hard for me. How about fully listening to a speaker until they finish their sentences instead of internally finishing for them or thinking about what I will say next?

Yours for mindful practice,

Fern

MEMBER NEWS

Further information about member Lois McCormick whose passing we noted last week:

Lois spent most of her adult life in the Cleveland area, raising her family and actively participating in many community organizations, political campaigns, and advocacy movements. Lois was a proud alumna of SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music and was a long-time member of the American Guild of Organists as well as the Women's Committee of the Cleveland Orchestra. She was a popular substitute liturgical organist and played at numerous churches in the Cleveland area until Fall 2012. Lois was an avid birder and loved to take her grandchildren to the nature center near her house. Lois was a skilled knitter, producing many beautiful pieces still worn and cherished by her family.

The family suggests donations be made in Lois' memory to The Community Hospice, 295 Valley View Blvd, Rensselaer, NY 12144; The Lake Erie Nature and Science Center, 28728 Wolf Road, Bay Village, Ohio 44140; or The Crane Annual Fund, Office of Advancement Services, SUNY Potsdam, Potsdam, NY 13676. A reception was held at Lois' home in Ohio..

CHAGRIN FALLS ECUMENICAL CHOIR TO PERFORM VERDI

On Oct  6 an ecumenical choir with  churches/synagogues/chorales will have an amazing collaborative experience with the Chagrin Valley Film Festival and the Chagrin Studio Orchestra, Steve Eva, conductor. Under Steve's direction, we are going to perform 35 minutes (The Dies Irae section) of the Verdi Requiem following a powerful documentary about 150 prisoners in a concentration camp who sang the entire Requiem by memory in an act of defiance against their captors.

The film/concert is the evening of Sunday, October 6 and a rehearsal will be held Saturday morning, October 5. Everything takes place at the Federated Church, Chagrin Falls.

We would like to invite your choir to participate.   If the entire choir cannot be involved and you have individuals who would like to join us, we will be practicing at The Federated Church every Tuesday from 7:30 to 8:30pm, starting August 27.

The area's best operatic soloists will join us as the quartet of soloists.

If you have any questions, contact Marcia Snavely at marciasnavely1@aol.com or 440 338 6606.

TODAY IN CLASSICAL MUSIC HISTORY

In the year 1735 German composerwas born in  Leipzig. He was the youngest son of Johann Sebastian Bach. JS Bach died when JC Bach was only fifteen. Little of his father's style is heard in the younger Bach's music. He was known as the "London" Bach because he lived there for much of his career. He composed in the galante style which influenced the music of Mozart. He died in London, on Jan 1, 1782. Here is link to his concerto in B Major:
