I have been rereading a book that has been on my bookshelf for some time, Thomas Moore's The Re-Enchantment of Everyday Life. As adults we get oh so serious about our life and the pressing things we "have" to do. We do not find much joy in our day to day life. It is good to be intentional about noticing and being enchanted by things or events in our day to day existence. The beauty of nature, the smile of a child, a well-prepared meal, a beautiful piece of music. What if we looked for the enchantment in our weekly music? Does that piece of music still move you? Could we be more joyful in our interactions with our choir? In the instruments we play?

I watched an unmemorable movie that was so low-budget the sound track consisted of single notes played on a piano. But it worked! It simplified our reaction to the movie. It was endearing and somewhat amusing to consider someone sitting by a recorder and plunking some notes and then editing them into the film. What if the next time you sat down at the organ you just pulled a few random stops and listened to them one note at a time. Really listened to the quality of the sound and just enjoyed one note? Something to think about.

Best to you,

Fern

TODAY IN CLASSICAL MUSIC HISTORY

On this date in 1661 French composer, harpsichordist and organist Louis Couperin died in Paris at the early age of 35. He was the organist at the important Parisian church of Saint Gervais. Over 200 works of his survive though none were published in his lifetime. Couperin's influential in developments in the French organ school included  the writing of pieces for specific registrations. Take a look at this lovely video and recording on Couperin's organ at Saint Gervais and you will feel like you took a mini vacation to Paris:
