One of the obligations of our organization is an Annual Meeting to be held in May each year. And so we will meet this Sunday following a concert by Good Company: a Vocal Ensemble at Lakewood Presbyterian Church. I have been to a number of this choir's concerts and always find them enjoyable. Director Karen Weaver always has unusual and interesting programming ideas. I was told by one of the choristers that Lakewood native composer David Conte will be at the concert and will conduct his own composition, "Elegy for Matthew".

We will begin our meeting at about 6pm. We will review our year and install officers for next year. There will be an opportunity for you to give direction to the board for things you would like to see happen in the coming year. Oh, and door prizes! Do join us and support your AGO chapter!

I would like to mention that Good Company has a loyal following and sometimes parking is at a premium. There is parking in front of and behind the church as well as on adjacent streets. You may want to allow a little extra time for parking.

I will be attending the Ohio Dean's meeting in Columbus on Saturday so I have a full weekend of AGO duties.

See you Sunday,

Fern

As a choral conductor, you are cordially invited to attend an Open Rehearsal and Reception on Wednesday, May 22, with the legendary choral conductor Jameson Marvin. As part of his week-long residency with Quire Cleveland, Dr. Marvin will be sharing his expertise and artistry in a program called "From Rome to Cleveland: Palestrina at St. Peter's." The program includes the entire "Pope Marcellus Mass," along with exquisite motets by the renowned Renaissance composer.

You'll have an opportunity to observe his skills during the rehearsal, and then meet and chat with him-and your colleagues-at a mid-rehearsal reception. There will be food and drink and plenty of things to talk about!

We hope you will also invite your choir members to the concert, Saturday, May 25, 7:30 pm at St. Peter Parish in downtown Cleveland.

Where: Harkness Chapel, 11200 Bellflower Road, University Circle
When: Wednesday, May 22, 7-10 pm

Jameson Marvin served as Director of Choral Activities at Harvard University from 1978 to 2010.

Under his leadership, the Harvard Glee Club, Radcliffe Choral Society, and Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum rose to be among the premier collegiate choruses in America.

Jim Marvin enjoys a distinguished national reputation for his insightful, communicative, and exuberant conducting. Thousands of choral singers have been inspired by his choral artistry.

If your schedule mandates, you can come late or leave early, but don't miss this wonderful opportunity-made possible in part through a generous grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture.

TODAY IN CLASSICAL MUSIC HISTORY

Cage, John
John Cage
In1969 the first performance of John Cage's HPSCHD for amplified harpsichord and 51 tapes was given in Urbana, IL. This work was performed in the atrium of the Cleveland Museum of Art in the after concert party following the Cleveland Orchestra performance of California music this month. It was... unusual. Here is a link to a blog posting by the museum about this piece.

For adventurous listeners here is a recorded performance of the work.
