This spring feels like a marathon of classical music concerts. The dedicated concert attendee has a difficult time deciding which to support. Two notable events for organists and choral directors take place this weekend. The first is the Choir Festival Jubilation! This takes place on Friday and Saturday at St. John's Cathedral. Six choirs will compete for actual money prizes. If you can't go down to the Cathedral the competition will be broadcast live on WCLV. You will find a feature article on the competition and the other major event happening this weekend on Cleveland Classical. It is not often we get to celebrate a new organ in Cleveland but that will happen this Sunday at the Church of the Covenant. The Richards, Fowkes and Co. Gallery organ will be dedicated at a 10 am service followed by  a 2 pm recital by James David Christie. Jonathan Moyer, music director of the Church of the Covenant is to be congratulated on the completion of this project.

Hope to see you at an event!

TODAY IN CLASSICAL MUSIC HISTORY

Buxtehude, Dietrich
Dietrich Buxtehude
In the year 1707 organist and composer Dietrich Buxtehude died in Lübeck. Buxtehude's last position, from 1668 was at the Marienkirche in Lübeck. As was often the custom at the time in order to secure the post Buxtehude married his predecessor's daughter. There he instituted a series of musical performances called Abendmusik which attracted musicians from a wide area. The story is that when George Fridrich Handel and Johann Mattheson showed up to a concert, Buxtehude offered his position to the one that would marry his daughter. They declined and supposedly left town the next day. Famously, a young J.S. Bach walked 250 miles to hear Buxtehude play and stayed for three months.
