Jennings, Fern

Friends,

I was going to write to you about how I have this lousy cold, and I don't think Easter and spring will ever come and how this season of Lent is just hard. But I changed my mind after I received a message from Oberlin from DeRon. DeRon sang in my choir for a year before going to Interlochen for his senior year. DeRon is a talented singer, outgoing, and self-assured and he is black. He has been living  with his grandmother since his mom got evicted from her house. Now he is a freshman voice major at Oberlin. This seemed  like a wonderful fit for DeRon. He sang with us at Christmas and was enjoying everything at Oberlin. That is until recent events. Now he says he doesn't  know how he feels about being there. He is not really comfortable any more but doesn't know what else to do. Being young and having someone stomp on your dreams is what is hard. Being scared at school is unfair.

So now my cold seems minor. What is consuming all of your energy right now? Is it big stuff or really small in the scheme of things? Maybe the bigotry and hate at Oberlin is from the outside and will be resolved with an arrest or two. Maybe DeRon will get his passion and joy back. Maybe I will too. Balance. Life is about balance. Sometimes you just need to get outside of yourself and realign your perspective.

I am movin' toward spring,
Fern
