Jubilation! The Elizabeth Stuart Church Choir Festival Rules - 2013

WCLV's Jubilation! Church Choir Festival was established in 2008 to showcase sacred choral music that is recognized as part of the core classical repertoire, to encourage a heightened standard of choral music in houses of worship, and to celebrate choirs that joyfully strive for excellence. Festival participation is by audition, with six finalist choirs singing before a live audience on May 9th and 10th at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in downtown Cleveland. WCLV will broadcast the performances.

Participation
Choirs from any house of worship located in the following counties may participate: Cuyahoga; Lorain; Stark; Geauga; Summit; Lake; Ashtabula; Medina.

Preliminaries
The preliminary round is held by recorded submissions sent to Jubilation!, WCLV, Idea Center, 1375 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, Ohio 44115. Deadline for entry is March 26, 2013. In the preliminary round, choirs are asked to submit two pieces that meet the parameters outlined below:
· Any piece from a Baroque, Classical, or Romantic era cantata or oratorio. Bach, Handel, Mendelssohn, etc.;
· Any choral selection from a Requiem;
· Any selection from the English choral tradition - Vaughan Williams, Britten, Elgar, etc.;
· Any spiritual or work in the African-American Gospel tradition;
· Any Renaissance a capella selection. (Finalist choirs will be required to sing at least one a capella piece.)

Final Round
From the pool of entries, six choirs will be selected to participate in the final round which will be held at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist at 1007 Superior Avenue, Cleveland, at 8:00 pm on May 9th and 10th. WCLV will announce the six finalists on the air at 104.9 FM on April 5, 2013. The list of finalists will also be posted at wclv.com, and choir directors will be directly notified by phone and/or and email.
Finalists will be asked to prepare and perform a 20 minute program for the final round. The program must include at least one selection from a list of repertoire that will be provided, with the rest of the program reflecting a variety of musical styles. Three choirs will perform on each evening of the Festival. Finalists will have access to a tuned grand piano for the performance, but must provide their own accompanists.

Adjudication
Choirs will be judged on their technical ability, their musicality, and their work as an ensemble. Judges for Jubilation! 2013 will be announced in February.
Prizes
First Prize is a trophy and $1,000 toward the winning choir's music program. Each of the other finalist choirs will receive $500 and a commemorative plaque. All finalist choirs will receive CDs of their performances.

REGIONAL CONVENTION

The website and registration for the Region V Convention to be held in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek June 30-July 3 are now open. http://www.agokalamazoo.org/. Schedules, information about recitalist and organs are available on the site. They are billing this as a walkable convention other than the bus ride to Battle Creek. Plenty of time is allowed for lunch or returning to your room during the day. A four hour drive from Cleveland with an affordable registration and accommodation price makes this  an excellent value in a close-to-home convention experience for Clevelanders. Did I mention I will be presenting a workshop on Guild Exams?

TODAY IN CLASSICAL MUSIC HISTORY

In 1790 English organist and composer Capel Bond died. This little known composer wrote six concertos and three anthems that we know of. Click the image below to listen to a performance of his concerto for trumpet and strings. Bond was born in Gloucester and moved to Coventry where he was organist of S. Michael and All Angels, and Holy Trinity Church. He married Ann Spooner in 1768, an event which did not impress one of his wife's relatives who wrote: "I had seen Miss Spooner's marriage in the news and never was more surprised how careful ought people to be that have Daughters who they admit into their families. I should have thought no man less formidable than Mr. Bond." Choral Wiki has one of Bond's  choral anthem "O Lord Our Governor" available for free download: http://www1.cpdl.org/wiki/images/e/e3/BondC-OLord.pdf

His tombstone reads:

CAPEL BOND
40 years organist of the Churches
of St Michael and Holy Trinity in
COVENTRY
He [wa]s an eminent musician
[and] indulgent husband
[an]d steady in his friendships
[exempl]ary in the constant practice
[of his Ch]ristian and social duties
he died February 14 1790 / aged 59.
