Jennings, Fern

Check-in at Monday's Executive Committee meeting was with the names of prospective AGO members. Each committee member was asked to name a person or persons who might join our organization. As happens at these meetings, the conversation veered into the question of why these persons would want to join AGO. What do we offer our members?  We thought that developing a list of reasons to join might help in our recruitment efforts.

Why did you join AGO? AGO offers numerous things from chapter programs to scholarships, competitions, professional examinations, conventions, and the magazine. We are a network through which we can contact our peers and stay current on what is happening within our profession.

I think that the biggest reason to support the AGO is so that it will be there. The AGO is THE professional organization that advocates for the organ and organists in the United States. Do we want it to be there? It is not perfect. It needs to change from time to time to keep up with modern times. We may not like the changes. Or we may think they happen too slowly. We may not like the leadership. But it is important to stick with it. If there are changes we would like to see, we need to get involved and shape the direction of the organization.

Stick around!

Fern

The choral music listed below is useful for all treble voices including women's choirs. No registration fee charged for observers - a free-will donation in the basket at the registration table will be appreciated.

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE NEWS

At its meeting on February 4 the Executive Committee set the local chapter portion for half year dues. National has send information about their half year dues structure. Total dues for a partial year range from $50 for a regular member to $5 for a chapter friend with rates for Special and Student memberships. The application and fee structure can be accessed from this linkalong with payment information.

The Executive Committee voted to reimburse up to five student members with $100 of their examination  application fee when they take an AGO exam. This is for this year only and will be awarded to the first five students whose applications are received by our Exam Coordinator.

REGIONAL CONVENTION

The website and registration for the Region V Convention to be held in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek June 30-July 3 are now open. http://www.agokalamazoo.org/. Schedules, information about recitalist and organs are available on the site. They are billing this as a walkable convention other than the bus ride to Battle Creek. Plenty of time is allowed for lunch or returning to your room during the day. A four hour drive from Cleveland with an affordable registration and accommodation price makes this  an excellent value in a close-to-home convention experience for Clevelanders. Did I mention I will be presenting a workshop on Guild Exams?

TODAY IN CLASSICAL MUSIC HISTORY

On this date in 1779 English organist and composer William Boyce died. He is recognized as one of the most important English composers of the 18th century. Born in 1711, he was appointed organist at Oxford Chapel in 1734 and "Master of the King's Musick" in 1755. He wrote eight symphonies, numerous anthems and odes and chamber music. He is largely remembered today by church musicians. Here is a link to free downloadable music by Boyce:  http://www3.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/William_Boyce.  Since I wrote this on my birthday, I thought it fitting to include a link to the last movement of Boyce's Birthday Symphony. The first work Boyce composed after being appointed Master of the King's Musick was this Symphony for the King's birthday, November 10, 1755. (FJ)
