From the Dean
A dozen or so of us gathered in the Gallery of the Church of the Covenant this past Saturday to view the new Newberry Organ in the early stages of its installation. It was amazing that the organ, which had been in pieces in the nave, having only arrived on Monday, had been erected and while not playable yet was certainly on its way. Jonathan Moyer described the long process of conceiving of a new Baroque organ for the gallery, identifying a builder, and the acoustical and nave restoration work that took place prior to the actual building of the organ. The balcony was rebuilt to accommodate the new organ. Organ builder, Bruce Fowkes, described some of the detail of the organ including the tuning, case work, and voicing that will take place in the coming weeks. Jonathan described the planned use of the organ as a showcase for Baroque music. There is a planned partnership with Case Western Reserve University to present Baroque music concerts. A number of events are planned in conjunction with the new instrument including an Open House from 10am- noon on March 2 and Baroque Vespers and Recital on March 3 at 5pm by Peter Bennett of CWRU. The dedication service and concert will take place on Sunday May 12 featuring a recital by James David Christie at 2pm. It is exciting to see an important new instrument being installed in Cleveland. Best to you, Fern

MEMBER NEWS
Dr. Richard Ruggles, long-time member of the AGO, died on Jan. 20. He was 93. A pioneering ear, nose and throat specialist he specialized in treating deafness. According to his obituary he bought a house in Cleveland Heights in 1954 mostly because it came with a pipe organ. Is it any wonder that his son Charles became an organ builder? Here is a link to his obituary.

AGO CLEVELAND GOOGLE CALENDAR
Do you use the Google Calendar on our website: agocleveland.org? The idea behind this calendar was to have a resource for members to use when planning their own programs. This calendar extends farther ahead than our weekly update calendar listings. At this time we need a member who is willing to post those updates. Training will be provided. Please contact dean@agocleveland.org if you are willing to take on this task.

| REGIONAL CONVENTION
The website and registration for the Region V Convention to be held in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek June 30-July 3 are now open. http://www.agokalamazoo.org/. Schedules, information about recitalist and organs are available on the site. They are billing this as a walkable convention other than the bus ride to Battle Creek. Plenty of time is allowed for lunch or returning to your room during the day. A four hour drive from Cleveland with an affordable registration and accommodation price makes this an excellent value in a close-to-home convention experience for Clevelanders. Did I mention I will be presenting a workshop on Guild Exams?

TODAY IN CLASSICAL MUSIC HISTORY
German composer, organist and harpsichordist Max Drischner was born on this date in 1891. He shared an interest with Albert Schweitzer of a technique called "Silesian organ technique" which evidently involved a kind of kinesetic analysis and they developed a close friendship. Here is a link to Diane Bish playing his "O Run Ye Shepherds to the Manger" on the Kney organ at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto.
